Manhole Component Types

Material Selection

Design Considerations

Fabrication Process

Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts frame components, bracket plates, and locking mechanisms from flat sheet stock. CNC press brake machines form frame profiles and mounting flanges. Component assembly uses MIG welding for galvanized steel and TIG welding for stainless steel. Surface treatments include hot-dip galvanizing, powder coating, and bituminous coating for underground corrosion protection.

Manhole and access covers are a wear-and-safety product rather than a structural one, and the two requirements that shape them are traffic loading and the level of the finished surface. A cover sits in a road or a pavement, so its frame has to transfer the wheel load into the surround without rocking; a frame that is not seated properly will rock under traffic and break up the surround within a season. That makes the seating detail – not the plate thickness – the critical part of the design, and it is why frames are made to sit on a prepared bed rather than simply be bolted down. Where a cover is a fabricated assembly rather than a casting, the other consideration is that it has to be liftable by one or two people, which sets an upper limit on mass that is often tighter than any strength requirement.
