Field Notes: Commercial Coat Racks and Garment Storage
A coat rack in a commercial setting is loaded differently from one at home: several heavy coats at once, on hooks that are used without care, on a rail that may run four metres. Three things follow from that. The load is concentrated at the hooks rather than spread along the rail, so the rail section is chosen for the point load at the outer hook rather than for the total. The rail has to stay level over its length, which means the fixings are spaced from the deflection limit rather than from the stud positions, and the customer is told what the fixing has to reach. And the assembly is checked for stability with the load at one end, because a rail that is bolted to a wall in four places can still pull away where the load is applied if the ends are not supported.
