Introduction

Mailbox Types

Street collection boxes provide curbside mail deposit for the public. Cluster box units (CBUs) provide centralized mail delivery for residential neighborhoods. Material Selection

Stainless steel (grade 304) provides premium mailboxes with decades of corrosion resistance and security. We use 1.5 to 2.5 mm sheet. Heavy-duty galvanized steel provides cost-effective mailboxes with good corrosion resistance. Aluminum provides light weight for residential mailbox units with anodizing for surface protection. Powder coating provides color options and additional protection. All mailboxes must resist prying, cutting, and vandalism attempts.

Design Considerations

Mailboxes must protect mail from rain, snow, and humidity. Deposit slots must be sized to accept standard mail while preventing hand insertion for theft. Locking mechanisms must be secure against picking and forced entry. Mail collection doors must be accessible to postal personnel with standard keys. Boxes must be anchored to prevent theft of the entire unit. All edges must be smooth for public safety. High-visibility identification must be permanently displayed. Boxes must meet postal service specifications.

Fabrication Process

Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts mailbox body panels, doors, and frame components from flat sheet stock. CNC press brake machines form mailbox bodies, doors, and mounting brackets. Component assembly uses TIG welding for stainless steel and MIG welding for galvanized steel, with continuous welds for weather sealing and security. Surface treatments include powder coating in postal service colors, electropolishing for stainless steel, and anti-graffiti coatings.

Field Notes: Public Mail and Parcel Boxes

A public mailbox or parcel locker is a security product before it is a metal box, and the fabrication has to follow from that. The door mechanism is where the security actually lives: the door needs stiffness so that it cannot be sprung far enough to reach the lock, the hinge has to be either concealed or protected so that it cannot be cut or unbolted from outside, and the lock provision has to be compatible with the locking system the operator already uses. On the weathering side, a box that stands outdoors has to drain, because a parcel locker that fills with water at the base will fail at the base weld. And on the finish side, a coated part cannot be repaired in the field, so any fixing that will be drilled on site has to be planned into the cutting rather than added afterwards.
