Material Selection

Hot-dip galvanized steel is the standard material for street light poles, providing decades of corrosion resistance. We use 3.0 to 6.0 mm steel tube depending on pole height and wind requirements. For coastal locations, stainless steel (grade 316L) provides superior corrosion resistance. Aluminum poles offer light weight and natural corrosion resistance for pedestrian-scale lighting. Powder coating over galvanizing provides color options and additional protection.

Design Considerations

Poles must withstand wind loads calculated from local wind speeds, pole height, and luminaire projected area. Pole base must support the combined weight of pole, luminaire, and wind loading. Access doors must provide cable access while maintaining structural integrity. Pole height and arm length must position luminaires for proper light distribution. Mounting must accommodate various luminaire types. Poles must resist vandalism and weathering. Aesthetic design should complement urban streetscapes.

Fabrication Process

Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts pole base plates, arm brackets, and access door frames from flat sheet stock. Tube processing equipment cuts and tapers steel tubes for pole shafts. CNC press brake machines form base plates, arm profiles, and door frames. Component assembly uses MIG welding for galvanized steel and TIG welding for stainless steel, with full-penetration welds at critical structural connections. Surface treatments include hot-dip galvanizing, powder coating, and electropolishing.

Case Study: Lighting Columns for a UK Platform Project

Lighting column and pole components were fabricated at Fulei Metal in 2025 as part of a UK programme of roughly 1,500 platform facility items. A tapered column is made by developing a taper in flat plate, rolling it into a cone and welding the longitudinal seam – and the development is where a mistake is expensive, because the plate is cut to that shape and the diameters follow from it. Two further operations decide whether the column is right when it arrives. The base plate is welded on, which puts a heat affected zone in the column wall exactly where the bending moment from wind load is greatest, so the wall thickness and weld size there are design decisions rather than defaults. And the whole column is then hot-dip galvanized, which relieves stress and moves a long part, so straightness is checked after the dip and any correction is made without damaging the coating.
