Utensil racks share a design problem with anything that holds items of varying size: the compartment dimensions have to come from the largest item that has to fit, not from an even division of the available width. Dividing a rack into equal compartments looks right on a drawing and fails as soon as a turner or a ladle arrives, and the failure is a customer complaint rather than a dimensional fault. The second issue is drainage, because a rack that holds wet utensils will hold water too – the hole size has to drain freely while still stopping slim handles falling through, and those two requirements pull in opposite directions. On food contact racks, joints are welded through rather than spot welded, since the gap between two spot welded sheets cannot be cleaned.
