Field Notes: Ceiling and Wall Mounted Pot Racks

A hanging pot rack carries a distributed load from above, which makes the ceiling or wall fixing the governing component rather than the rack. The rack itself is straightforward tube and wire work with one recurring weak point: the welds. On wire and rod construction the weld is both the structural joint and the hardest place for a coating to cover evenly, so it is where corrosion starts and where the part is least protected – rod ends are closed rather than left open, and welds on a coated product are dressed before finishing rather than left proud. The other consideration is height and clearance: the rack has to be reachable, which constrains where the fixing can go, and the fixing has to hold a load applied at the end of a lever arm rather than directly above it.
