Explore how spice racks are designed and fabricated from sheet metal for kitchen organization. Learn about material selection, space optimization, and real-world products.
Introduction
Spice organization is a common kitchen challenge, with home cooks needing easy access to many small containers. Metal spice racks provide durable, space-efficient solutions that keep spices visible and accessible. At Fulei Metal, we fabricate spice rack components for kitchen goods brands across Europe and Japan.
Spice Rack Types
Wall-mounted spice racks provide tiered shelving for spice jars on walls. Drawer spice racks organize spices in kitchen drawers with divided compartments. Cabinet door spice racks mount inside cabinet doors for hidden storage. Countertop spice racks provide tiered display on counters. Pull-out spice racks slide out from narrow cabinet spaces for maximum accessibility. Magnetic spice racks attach spice containers magnetically to metal backs.
Material Selection
Stainless steel (grade 304) provides premium spice racks with corrosion resistance, hygiene, and modern aesthetics. Spice racks may be exposed to spice dust and moisture, making stainless steel ideal. We use 0.8 to 1.5 mm sheet. Powder-coated steel provides cost-effective spice racks with color options. Aluminum provides light weight for wall-mounted applications with anodizing for surface protection.
Design Considerations
Spice rack shelves must be sized for standard spice jars (approximately 40-50 mm diameter). Tier spacing must allow easy reading of jar labels. Wall-mounted racks must use secure mounting for the combined weight of jars and spices. Drawer racks must fit standard kitchen drawer dimensions. All surfaces must be easy to clean, as spice racks accumulate spice dust. Designs should be compact to maximize storage in limited kitchen space. Edges must be smooth for safety and easy cleaning.
Fabrication Process
Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts shelf blanks, bracket components, and frame parts from thin-gauge sheet stock. CNC press brake machines form shelves, brackets, and mounting plates with precise dimensions. Component assembly uses TIG welding for stainless steel and MIG welding for powder-coated steel. Surface treatments include brushed finishes for stainless steel and powder coating in client-specified colors.
Field Notes: Spice Racks and Small Kitchen Organisation
Small kitchen organisation products are judged on two things that the specification sheet rarely covers: whether the item stays where it is put, and whether it is pleasant to touch. The first is a fixing question – a rack on a kitchen wall is fixed into plasterboard, tile or a cabinet side panel far more often than into a stud, so the mounting provision has to suit the likely substrate and the customer has to be told what it needs, rather than being left to find out after the drilling. The second is an edge question. These are items that are handled every day at close range, so cut edges are folded or rolled, corners are radiused, and the finish is chosen for how it wears rather than only for how it photographs – a brushed surface hides far more of the daily wear than a polished one.
Conclusion
