Commercial poultry farming requires specialized equipment that provides for bird welfare while maximizing production efficiency. Poultry cages, feeding systems, and housing components must withstand corrosive droppings, frequent cleaning, and constant bird activity. Poultry Equipment Types
Battery cage systems house multiple birds in stacked rows of wire-floored cages, with cage frames, door mechanisms, and egg collection channels from galvanized steel wire and tube. Feeding systems include feed troughs, automatic feed delivery components, and feed storage bins. Watering systems include nipple drinker lines, water pipe brackets, and water medication system components. Layer hens require nest boxes for egg laying. Broiler houses require feeder and drinker line supports, ventilation equipment brackets, and curtain systems.
Material Selection
Poultry cage floors and walls use galvanized steel wire with diameters of 2.0 to 5.0 mm. Cage frames and equipment supports use galvanized steel tube (20×20 to 50×50 mm, 1.0 to 2.0 mm wall). For components exposed to severe corrosion such as feeder pans in contact with wet feed, stainless steel (grade 304) provides superior longevity.
Hygiene and Cleaning Design
All poultry equipment must have smooth, easily cleanable surfaces. We design components without crevices, ledges, or joints where droppings and bacteria could accumulate. Equipment designs must prevent water accumulation. Poultry houses are cleaned with chemicals that can attack metal coatings, so we specify compatible coating systems.
Fabrication Process
Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts frame components, brackets, and mounting plates. Galvanized steel wire is cut and formed into cage floor and wall grids using automated spot welding equipment. Steel tubes are cut to length and notched for frame assembly. Frame assembly uses spot welding for wire grids and MIG welding for tube frames. Most poultry equipment is galvanized after fabrication, with stainless steel components possibly electropolished.
Case Study: Poultry Cage Systems for a US Producer
Poultry equipment supplied to a large-scale US livestock producer since 2016 has included cage framing and support structures built to the same rule as the rest of the range: galvanized after fabrication, with vents designed in so that the zinc bath reaches the inside of every closed section. Poultry housing puts a specific demand on the steel that general fencing does not. The atmosphere is warm, humid and ammonia-bearing, and ammonia attacks zinc steadily. That makes coating thickness on the inside surfaces of the framework the figure that decides service life, not the thickness on the outside where it is easy to measure. Tray and belt clearances are also set with an allowance for the coating, because a gap that measures correctly on bare steel can close up once the parts are galvanized.
