Environmental Challenges
Outdoor cabinets may face temperatures from minus 40 to plus 55 degrees Celsius or higher. UV radiation degrades paints, plastics, and sealants, so we specify UV-resistant polyester powder coatings with UV inhibitors. Rain, humidity, and condensation create corrosion risks, addressed through hot-dip galvanized steel bases with powder-coated top layers, or stainless steel for coastal environments. Wind loads require adequate structural reinforcement and appropriate anchoring systems.
Cabinet Design
For extreme temperature environments, double-wall construction with insulation provides superior thermal performance. Cabinet roofs must shed water with sloped designs and drip edges. Doors use continuous hinges, three-point locking mechanisms, and dual gasket seals. For foundation mounting, we fabricate bases that match the cabinet footprint and provide adequate clearance for cable entry.
Thermal Management Systems
Passive cooling uses natural convection with ventilation openings, solar shields, bug screens, and moisture filters. For high heat loads, we fabricate mounting features for fan trays, air conditioners, and heat exchangers. In cold climates, we install thermostatically controlled heaters to prevent condensation and maintain minimum operating temperatures.
Fabrication and Finishing
Our TRUMPF fiber laser and CNC press brake machines produce cabinet components with the precision required for weather-tight assembly. Continuous welds prevent water ingress through capillary action. Outdoor cabinets receive a multi-layer surface treatment: zinc-rich primer, base coat, and UV-resistant top coat, with total coating thickness of 120 to 200 microns.
Case Study: Outdoor Cabinets for a Norwegian Industrial Project
Outdoor equipment cabinets were fabricated at Fulei Metal in a 2025 run as part of a programme for a Norwegian industrial customer, running to some 1,000 pieces across the enclosure range. Outdoor enclosures in a Nordic climate are specified around two loads that a datasheet does not capture: snow sitting on the top surface, and freeze-thaw cycling on any surface where water can stand. The first decides the roof and door stiffness; the second decides the drainage and the position of every fixing. Water that cannot leave a horizontal surface will freeze, expand, and work at whatever joint is nearest. Cabinets are therefore detailed so that no surface is truly flat and no recess is left without a drain, and the door seal is checked with the cabinet in its installed orientation rather than lying on a bench.
