Feed Trough Design
Trough profiles must minimize feed waste by preventing animals from pulling feed out. We design troughs with rolled edges, internal lips, and appropriate depth-to-width ratios. Trough length must provide adequate feeding space for all animals, typically 300 to 600 mm per head for cattle. Trough height must be appropriate for the animal species, with cattle troughs at 600 to 800 mm and sheep troughs at 400 to 500 mm. Trough designs include wall-mounted, fence-mounted, and freestanding configurations.
Material Selection
Hot-dip galvanized steel is the standard material with zinc coating providing corrosion resistance against feed moisture and animal saliva. We use 1.0 to 2.5 mm sheet. For troughs in contact with wet feed or in corrosive environments, stainless steel (grade 304) provides superior longevity and hygiene. For enhanced appearance, powder coating over galvanized steel is available in various colors.
Design Considerations
Troughs must be designed for easy cleaning with smooth surfaces, rounded corners, and drainage features. Drain plugs allow regular cleaning and water removal. Troughs must withstand animal pressure, feed abrasion, and cleaning operations with adequate material thickness and structural reinforcement. All trough edges must be smooth or rolled to prevent animal injury, and mounting hardware must be secure and inaccessible to animals.
Fabrication Process
Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts trough blanks from flat sheet stock with precise dimensions. CNC press brake machines form trough bodies with complex profiles including rolled edges, internal lips, and drainage features. Trough assembly uses MIG welding for galvanized steel and TIG welding for stainless steel, with all feed-contact welds ground smooth. Galvanized troughs are hot-dip galvanized after fabrication, with stainless steel troughs possibly electropolished.
Case Study: Cattle Feedlot Trough System
An Australian cattle feedlot required 500 feed troughs for a new 10,000-head facility. The troughs needed to minimize feed waste, withstand daily cleaning, and resist corrosion from feed and cattle saliva.
