How This Custom Switchgear Cabinet Is Fabricated and Checked

A switchgear cabinet is a heavier-duty version of the same problem: the internal clearance is set by the busbar and breaker arrangement, and the structure has to hold that clearance during handling as well as in service.

StageWhat happensWhat is verified before the job moves on
Shell and structure formingBody, doors and internal structure formed from sheet or plateInternal clear dimensions and the flatness of the mounting surfaces, because breaker alignment depends on them
Compartment and barrier provisionInternal dividers, barriers and shrouds made to the electrical designPositions and clearances between compartments, which the electrical design sets rather than the cabinet
Cut-outs and cable provisionCable entries at base or top; gland plates; ventilation apertures as designedCut-out positions relative to the internal structure, plus burr condition, which matters at the cable sizes involved
Frame welding and squaringFrame and corner seams welded, with reinforcement at the base and where weight sitsDiagonals, door opening square and base flatness. A switchgear cabinet is often handled loaded and on skids
Door, lock and interlock provisionDoors with gaskets and locks, and provision for the mechanical interlockDoor alignment, lock engagement, and that the interlock provision matches the breaker arrangement
Surface preparation and coatingDegrease, phosphate and powder coat, with bonding pads, threads and contact areas maskedFilm thickness, and that masked areas are clear. Bonding continuity and contact surfaces cannot be corrected on site
Assembly and continuity checkHardware, internal fittings, earth bar and bonding fitted; continuity checkedEarth continuity between doors, panels and the main bar, and hardware torque at the busbar supports
Packing and handling provisionSkidding provision, wrapping and crating to the transport routeLifting points, and that the packed unit can be moved without loading the doors

Where Switchgear Cabinet Can Be Revised Without New Tooling

The electrical design fixes the clearances; the cabinet around them is where the options are.

Switchgear Cabinet: Common Buyer Questions

Who decides the internal clearances?

The electrical design does, and we manufacture to it. What we check is that the manufactured internal dimensions match what that design assumed, because a cabinet that is a few millimetres tight internally is discovered during assembly at the panel builder, which is the most expensive place to find it.

How is earth continuity maintained through a coated cabinet?

By designing the path: masked bonding pads, fitted studs and a bonding strap across the hinge line, either fitted before coating or masked through it. Coatings insulate, so continuity has to be designed rather than assumed.

Does the cabinet need to be handled with equipment installed?

Some projects require it, and it changes the base, the skidding provision and the packing. If the cabinet will be moved loaded, say so at enquiry stage so the base structure and the handling points are designed for that load case.

Internal clearance and bonding continuity are the two requirements that are expensive to fix later, and both are set before coating. Send the electrical layout through the RFQ form with the drawing so the envelope is built to it. Related: metal enclosure manufacturing, enclosure assembly and export packaging.

Stiffness Is the Real Problem in a 2 mm Cabinet

A switchgear cabinet built from 2.0 mm cold-rolled steel is workable, but only if the panels are detailed to resist flexing. A flat 800 mm wide door in 2 mm will drum when you push it, and once it drums the latch alignment drifts. The usual answers are a formed return on all four edges, a stiffening fold across the back panel, and – where the drawing allows – a double-fold on the door. We look at the panel sizes at quote stage and say plainly when a flat detail will not hold its shape through welding and coating.

  • Compartments are what make a switchgear cabinet different from a plain enclosure. Internal divisions have to be positioned to the busbar layout, so the drawing needs the compartment count and the routing, not just the outer dimensions.
  • Tin-plated copper busbar is supplied and assembled to the drawing; the current rating and the clearance distances belong to the electrical design, and certification of the finished assembly is carried out by the equipment manufacturer or a third party they appoint.
  • An IP54 rating is a design target on the drawing. Whether a finished cabinet meets it is verified on the unit, and we arrange that test per order with the result shipped with the batch.

What to Send With a Switchgear Enquiry

The outer size alone is not enough to quote. What decides the process is the compartment layout, the door configuration, the cut-outs for instruments and cable entry, the mounting plate, and whether there is a gland plate at the bottom. Cut-outs are the expensive part of the job and they are also the part most often left off a first drawing – a cabinet that arrives without them gets modified on site, which costs more than doing it under a laser.

Grounding continuity is worth stating explicitly. A painted cabinet does not conduct across its joints, so if the design needs electrical continuity through the structure, the joints need a defined solution on the drawing – a toothed washer, a masked area, or a separate bonding strap. Raise it early and it is a small line item; discover it during assembly and it is a rework. Lead time is quoted after drawing review and process confirmation.

Payment Terms

How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.

  • 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
  • 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
  • 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.

If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.

Questions buyers ask before sending drawings

The questions that come up most often before a project starts, answered the way we answer them by email.

What do you need from me to quote Custom Switchgear Cabinet?

2D drawings as PDF, DWG or DXF, or 3D files as STEP, IGES or SolidWorks, together with material grade, sheet thickness, surface finish, quantity and destination country. If the drawing is not finished yet, send a photo, a sketch or the existing part instead — we review what can be measured from it and reply with the questions that still need answering.

How long does a quotation take?

Enquiries are answered within one business day. Simple laser-cut and bent parts are quoted within 24 hours. Welded frames, assembled units and multi-part structures are quoted after the drawing review and process confirmation, and the date is confirmed in our reply.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

Prototypes are made from a single piece and small batches of 10–50 pieces are routine. Prototype, first batch and repeat volume are quoted together so the numbers stay consistent as the project scales.

Can you work from a sample or a photo if I have no drawing?

Yes. Send the part itself, clear photographs with a rule or caliper in frame, or a dimensioned sketch. We measure what can be measured, list what is still undefined, and confirm it with you before production.

Need a Similar Part?

Most enquiries that start on a page like this are not an order for Custom Switchgear Cabinet — they are a search for a factory that can make something like it. Send us your drawing, 3D model or sample and we will review the manufacturing process and the quotation requirements, then come back with a process plan, a price and a lead time.

We work from 2D drawings, STEP / DWG / DXF / PDF files, or a physical sample if that is all you have.

Trade Terms and Delivery

We quote under the standard Incoterms your logistics team already works with, and build the packing and documentation around the one you choose.

  • EXW — you collect from our Ningbo facility and run export clearance through your own forwarder.
  • FOB Ningbo — we deliver to the vessel at Ningbo port and handle export clearance.
  • CIF — we cover carriage and insurance to your named destination port.
  • DDP — we handle carriage, insurance, import clearance and duties through to your door.

Send your destination country, target delivery date and preferred trade term together with the drawing. Request a quotation.

Quotation Time

We quote from your drawings. How long that takes depends on what the part asks for:

  • Simple parts — quoted within 24 hours. Laser-cut blanks and bent components, supplied with complete 2D or 3D drawings. Mon–Fri, GMT+8.
  • Complex assemblies — quoted after the drawing review. Payment kiosks, multi-part welded frames, enclosures with purchased hardware, or anything needing a coating or assembly trial. We confirm a quotation date once the scope is clear.

Production lead time is quoted separately, after drawing review and process confirmation. Send your drawings.
