How This Industrial Control Panel Enclosure Is Fabricated and Checked
A control panel enclosure carries two requirements at once: the electrical clearance the assembly needs, and the mechanical protection the site demands. Both are settled in the shell, before the coating goes on.
| Stage | What happens | What is verified before the job moves on |
|---|---|---|
| Shell forming | Body, door and mounting plate formed and cut to the internal envelope | The internal clear dimensions and the plate fixing pattern, which decide whether the components will actually fit |
| Cut-outs and apertures | HMI, gland, fan and filter apertures made | Aperture positions, sizes and burr condition. A burr at a gland plate damages cable insulation during installation |
| Frame and seam welding | Corner seams and the door frame welded, with reinforcement where the weight sits | Diagonals across the door opening, and the door frame checked for twist before hinges are fitted |
| Door, hinge and gasket | Hinges, lock and sealing gasket fitted to the door | Door alignment, gasket compression and lock engagement, checked with the door closed on the finished gasket |
| Surface preparation and coating | Degrease, phosphate, then powder coat with masking at earth studs and gland areas | Film thickness, coverage inside corners, and that the masked areas are genuinely clear of coating |
| Assembly and verification | Mounting plate, cable management and hardware fitted; earth continuity checked | Continuity between the door and the body through the bonding strap, plus hardware torque |
| Packing | Door braced, unit wrapped, corners protected | The packed unit against the packing specification. The door is the vulnerable part in transit |

Changes Industrial Control Panel Enclosure Sheet Metal Can Absorb Without New Tooling
Enclosure customisation is mostly about the internal envelope and the apertures, because those are what the electrical design depends on.
| What can be changed | What it affects | What it does not affect |
|---|---|---|
| External dimensions and internal depth | Panel sizes, mounting plate size and the packing | The protection concept, as long as the gasket and door design stay the same |
| Single or double door | Hinge count, lock type and the swing clearance needed on site | The internal mounting plate |
| Mounting plate type and pattern | Component layout and the fixing positions | The shell |
| Protection rating | Gasket specification, door stiffness and how apertures are treated | The external dimensions |
| Cable entry at bottom, top or both | Gland plate position and the cut-outs behind it | The frame |
| Colour, finish and identification | Powder specification and any labelling requirement | Nothing structural |
Questions Buyers Ask About Industrial Control Panel Enclosure Sheet Metal
What does a higher IP rating actually change?
The gasket, the door stiffness and how every aperture is treated, not the sheet thickness. A cabinet designed as a general-purpose enclosure cannot be turned into a washdown enclosure by fitting a better gasket, because a door that flexes under a hose stream breaks the seal at the corners. Give the rating at enquiry stage.
Is the earth stud fitted before or after coating?
Before, and then masked through the coating. Coating between the bonding point and the frame is a continuity fault that only appears at commissioning. We mask the bonding area and check continuity through the door bonding strap as part of assembly.
Can the panel be built to our component layout?
Yes, and the useful time to do it is before the shell is cut. Send the component arrangement or the DIN-rail layout and the apertures and mounting pattern are made to it. Changing the layout after the shell is formed means a second set of apertures.
What decides whether a panel enclosure works is the internal envelope and the coating on the bonding points, and both are set before assembly. Send the component layout or the panel drawing through the RFQ form so the envelope is checked against it rather than against a nominal size. Related: enclosure manufacturing, enclosure assembly and the enclosure inspection checklist. Where several cabinets share one control system, the same shell logic is applied to industrial automation enclosures.
Sealing, Grounding and the Door That Has to Close
Control panel enclosures fail in three predictable ways: the seal is compressed unevenly, the door drops on its hinges, and the heat has nowhere to go. All three are detailing issues. A gasket needs a continuous, flat sealing face; a hinge needs to carry the door weight without deflection; and a sealed box full of drives needs a thermal path. We look for those three on the drawing before quoting and say where a detail will not do what the drawing expects of it.
- The IP rating on a drawing is a design target. Whether a finished enclosure achieves IP54 or IP65 is verified on the unit – we arrange that test per order and ship the result with the batch.
- A mounting plate is a separate part with its own flatness requirement. It is usually drilled to the component layout, so the layout has to be on the drawing.
- Single or double door changes more than appearance: a double door needs a centre meeting detail and, on a sealed enclosure, a defined way of closing the gap.
What Belongs on the Drawing and What Belongs to the Integrator
We build the enclosure to the drawing. The electrical assembly – the devices, the wiring, the clearances, the functional safety and the certification of the finished control panel – belongs to the panel builder or the machine manufacturer, or to a third party they appoint. Our scope is the sheet metal: material, gauge, folds, welds, finish, and holding the tolerances that let the components fit.
What we do contribute is practical. If a cut-out is placed where a fold cannot be formed, if a hinge position puts the door into the frame return, or if the enclosure has no provision for the heat its contents will generate, we say so at quote stage, when a change is a drawing revision rather than a scrap part. Typical size is around 800 x 600 x 250 mm, but we build to your dimension. Lead time is quoted after drawing review and process confirmation.
Payment Terms
How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.
- 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
- 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
- 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.
If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.
Questions buyers ask before sending drawings
The questions that come up most often before a project starts, answered the way we answer them by email.
What do you need from me to quote Industrial Control Panel Enclosure?
2D drawings as PDF, DWG or DXF, or 3D files as STEP, IGES or SolidWorks, together with material grade, sheet thickness, surface finish, quantity and destination country. If the drawing is not finished yet, send a photo, a sketch or the existing part instead — we review what can be measured from it and reply with the questions that still need answering.
How long does a quotation take?
Enquiries are answered within one business day. Simple laser-cut and bent parts are quoted within 24 hours. Welded frames, assembled units and multi-part structures are quoted after the drawing review and process confirmation, and the date is confirmed in our reply.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
Prototypes are made from a single piece and small batches of 10–50 pieces are routine. Prototype, first batch and repeat volume are quoted together so the numbers stay consistent as the project scales.
Can you work from a sample or a photo if I have no drawing?
Yes. Send the part itself, clear photographs with a rule or caliper in frame, or a dimensioned sketch. We measure what can be measured, list what is still undefined, and confirm it with you before production.
Need a Similar Part?
Most enquiries that start on a page like this are not an order for Industrial Control Panel Enclosure — they are a search for a factory that can make something like it. Send us your drawing, 3D model or sample and we will review the manufacturing process and the quotation requirements, then come back with a process plan, a price and a lead time.
We work from 2D drawings, STEP / DWG / DXF / PDF files, or a physical sample if that is all you have.
No complete drawings yet? Describe the part, send photos or a sketch, or send a sample — we can start from there. Discuss your project.
Trade Terms and Delivery
We quote under the standard Incoterms your logistics team already works with, and build the packing and documentation around the one you choose.
- EXW — you collect from our Ningbo facility and run export clearance through your own forwarder.
- FOB Ningbo — we deliver to the vessel at Ningbo port and handle export clearance.
