Metal part traceability is the ability to connect a delivered part or batch to the controlled drawing revision, specified material, manufacturing records and agreed inspection evidence. The correct level depends on project risk and must be defined before quotation.

Traceability Starts with Revision Control
A material certificate cannot compensate for an obsolete drawing. The purchase order, 2D drawing, 3D model and BOM need a clear priority when files conflict. The approved revision should follow the project from quotation through first article and repeat batch.
Part marking is not always appropriate on cosmetic or small components. Batch labels, travelers, carton labels or digital records may provide the required link, depending on the buyer's system.
Define Material Evidence at RFQ Stage
Buyers should state whether they need a standard material certificate, heat-level linkage, supplier declaration or another document. Availability and cost can differ by material source and quantity, so requesting the record after production may be too late.
Outside treatments also need a defined evidence scope. A generic statement that a part is coated is different from a certificate, measured result or approved sample tied to the purchase order.
Keep the Record Proportional to Project Risk
Not every bracket needs the same documentation as a safety-critical equipment assembly. A practical plan focuses on the records that help the buyer receive, assemble and investigate the product if a problem occurs.

Is a material certificate the same as full traceability?
No. Traceability also needs a defined link between the certificate, material lot or batch, drawing revision, production quantity and shipment identity.
Do all metal parts need individual serial numbers?
No. Batch labels, travelers, carton labels or digital records may be more suitable. The method should match project risk and the buyer's receiving system.
When should traceability requirements be shared?
Before quotation and material purchasing. Late requests may require a different material source, extra documents or rework that was not included in the original scope.
