Traffic sign poles support regulatory, warning, and guide signs that are essential for road safety. These poles must withstand wind loads, support sign panels, and meet crash safety standards for roadside installation. At Fulei Metal, we fabricate traffic sign pole components for road authorities and signage contractors across Europe and Southeast Asia.

Traffic Sign Pole Types

Round tubular poles are the most common type for general traffic signage. Square tubular poles provide a modern appearance for urban installations. Breakaway poles feature designed failure points that reduce vehicle impact severity. Mast arm poles support signs over roadways with horizontal arm extensions. Multi-sign poles support several signs at complex intersections. Countdown timer poles support pedestrian crossing signals.

Choosing Material for Traffic Sign Pole Metal Fabrication

Hot-dip galvanized steel is the standard material for traffic sign poles, providing decades of corrosion resistance. We use 2.0 to 5.0 mm steel tube depending on pole height, sign area, and wind requirements. For coastal locations, stainless steel (grade 316L) provides superior corrosion resistance. Aluminum poles offer light weight and natural corrosion resistance for smaller signs. Powder coating over galvanizing provides color options and additional protection.

Design Choices That Affect Traffic Sign Pole Metal Fabrication

Poles must withstand wind loads calculated from local wind speeds, pole height, and sign panel area. Breakaway poles must fail at specified load levels to reduce vehicle impact severity per crash standards. Sign mounting height must meet standards: typically 2.0 to 2.5 meters for roadside signs. Pole foundation must support pole and sign weight with appropriate embedment. All edges must be smooth. Poles must resist vandalism and weathering. Aesthetic design should be unobtrusive in road environments.

Cutting, Bending and Welding Traffic Sign Pole Metal Fabrication

Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts pole base plates, sign mounting brackets, and breakaway mechanism components from flat sheet stock. Tube processing equipment cuts and tapers steel tubes for pole shafts. CNC press brake machines form base plates, bracket profiles, and breakaway mechanisms. Component assembly uses MIG welding for galvanized steel and TIG welding for stainless steel, with full-penetration welds at structural connections. Surface treatments include hot-dip galvanizing and powder coating.

Field Notes: Traffic Sign Poles and Sign Structures

A traffic sign pole is a structure that has to hold a panel in wind and be surviveable when it is hit, and those two requirements pull in opposite directions. Holding the panel means the pole has to be stiff enough at the mounting point that the sign does not rotate or vibrate, and the foundation has to take the overturning moment from the panel area. Surviving impact means the pole should be the part that yields rather than the sign becoming a projectile – which is why passive poles are often designed with a defined weak point. Where a pole is a fabricated tube rather than an extruded section, the details that matter are the base plate weld, the door or access opening for wiring, and the galvanizing, since a pole stands outdoors for decades and the inside of a closed pole is where corrosion starts if it is not vented and drained.

What a Sign Pole Drawing Has to Specify

A traffic sign pole is a structural part sold as a catalogue item, and the drawings that come with an enquiry are often just a height and a diameter. What actually decides the part is the section and wall thickness, the base arrangement, and the interface at the top — the bracket or the slip-base or the direct mount the sign plate goes onto. Those three set everything downstream, and a pole specified only by height cannot be quoted properly because the wall thickness is doing the structural work.

The base is where site conditions enter the drawing. A pole set into a concrete foundation needs a base plate with a hole pattern and, usually, a template for the anchor bolts; a pole going into an existing foundation needs that foundation’s bolt pattern and projection, which is the single item most often missing from an enquiry. Tell us which of the two applies and the dimensions follow.

Can you match an existing authority standard?

Yes. Send the standard drawing — section, wall, height, base plate and hole pattern, and the top interface — and we will build to it and flag any dimension the standard leaves open.

Who sizes the pole for wind load?

Wind loading, foundation design and the pole section for a given site are engineering assessments for the specifier, the authority or their engineer, who know the exposure category and the ground conditions. We build to the section and base you specify and tell you what we need to make it repeatable.

Coating Sequence and the Part That Rusts First

On a sign structure the first rust almost always appears at the base, and it appears there for two reasons: water sits at the base plate, and any field drilling for cable entry or for fixing exposes bare steel. Both are drawing issues. A base plate with a drain path, and a specified cable entry made during fabrication rather than on site, remove most of it. The remainder is coating sequence — hot-dip galvanizing applied after all cutting, welding and drilling, so that every opening is coated rather than bare.

The top interface is the second place parts fail. A clamp that grips only by friction will rotate under wind load, and the fix is a keyed or flat-faced clamp that matches the pole section. Where a sign has to be demountable, the slip-base or the breakaway element is a specified item with its own hole pattern and its own hardware, and it needs to be on the enquiry rather than assumed.

Inspection follows the buyer drawing and the approved sample, with general tolerances to ISO 2768 unless stated. Straightness and base plate squareness are checked on a sample from each batch, and coating thickness is recorded. Material and coating documentation is issued per order — see material certification and traceability. Poles are bundled with separation and end protection; for export consignments see export packaging standards.

Payment Terms

How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.

  • 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
  • 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
  • 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.

If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.

Questions buyers ask before sending drawings

The questions that come up most often before a project starts, answered the way we answer them by email.

What do you need from me to quote Traffic Sign Pole?

2D drawings as PDF, DWG or DXF, or 3D files as STEP, IGES or SolidWorks, together with material grade, sheet thickness, surface finish, quantity and destination country. If the drawing is not finished yet, send a photo, a sketch or the existing part instead — we review what can be measured from it and reply with the questions that still need answering.

How long does a quotation take?

Enquiries are answered within one business day. Simple laser-cut and bent parts are quoted within 24 hours. Welded frames, assembled units and multi-part structures are quoted after the drawing review and process confirmation, and the date is confirmed in our reply.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

Prototypes are made from a single piece and small batches of 10–50 pieces are routine. Prototype, first batch and repeat volume are quoted together so the numbers stay consistent as the project scales.

Can you work from a sample or a photo if I have no drawing?

Yes. Send the part itself, clear photographs with a rule or caliper in frame, or a dimensioned sketch. We measure what can be measured, list what is still undefined, and confirm it with you before production.

Send Your Drawings

Need a Similar Part?

Most enquiries that start on a page like this are not an order for Traffic Sign Pole — they are a search for a factory that can make something like it. Send us your drawing, 3D model or sample and we will review the manufacturing process and the quotation requirements, then come back with a process plan, a price and a lead time.

We work from 2D drawings, STEP / DWG / DXF / PDF files, or a physical sample if that is all you have.
