Material Selection

Powder-coated aluminum provides lightweight, corrosion-resistant signs with excellent color reproduction. We use 2.0 to 3.0 mm aluminum sheet. Reflective sheeting applied to metal panels provides night visibility. For coastal locations, aluminum or 316L stainless steel is recommended.

Design Considerations

Sign placement must be visible at intersections without obstruction. Signs must withstand wind loads and potential vandalism. Fabrication Process

Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts sign panel blanks and bracket components from flat sheet stock. CNC press brake machines form sign panel edges and mounting brackets. Component assembly uses TIG welding for stainless steel and mechanical fasteners for aluminum. Surface treatments include powder coating in client-specified colors, anodizing for aluminum, and reflective sheeting application.

Field Notes: Street and Place Name Signs

A street name sign is a tolerance product that gets handled roughly. The panel is usually made by a specialist in your market, so the frame or the mounting bracket has to accept that panel without rattle and hold it through wind loading, and the interface dimensions therefore have to be settled before anything is cut. The handling requirement is the one that catches suppliers out. A sign at the top of a pole is exposed to wind from every direction, including from behind, so the fixing has to hold the panel in tension rather than relying on gravity; the mounting bracket has to be stiff in the direction the wind pushes rather than in the direction it was easiest to design; and the finish has to be chosen for a surface that will be cleaned and, in some locations, painted over. Anodizing cannot be touched up, and powder coating can be matched but not blended.
