How This IP67 Junction Box Is Fabricated and Checked
An IP67 junction box is a sealing problem before it is a sheet metal one. The rating is held by the lid flatness, the gasket land and the condition of every aperture edge, and all three are set before coating.
| Stage | What happens | What is verified before the job moves on |
|---|---|---|
| Body and lid forming | Body and lid formed, with the gasket land formed or machined as the design requires | Lid flatness and land depth. A lid that is not flat cannot compress a gasket evenly, whatever the gasket is made of |
| Cable entry preparation | Entry positions marked and made to the cable specification, with tapped entries where required | Thread condition and burrs inside the entry, because a burr is what cuts a cable sheath during installation |
| Seam welding | Body seams welded where a one-piece body is not possible | Weld penetration and surface condition at the gasket land. A weld bead left proud of the land breaks the seal |
| Gasket fitting | Gasket cut to the land and fitted | That the gasket sits without tension and without overlap at the corners, which is where leaks start |
| Surface preparation and coating | Degrease, phosphate and powder coat, with sealing faces and thread areas masked | Film thickness, and that masked sealing faces are clear. Coating on a gasket land is a leak path |
| Assembly and seal check | Lid fitted and torqued in sequence; sealing checked | Screw torque sequence, and where specified a water or pressure test against the stated method |
| Packing | Individually wrapped with the gasket and sealing face protected | That the sealing face is not deformed and the gasket not compressed in the box |

What Can Change on Junction Box IP67 Sheet Metal Without New Tooling
On a sealed box the gasket path is the fixed asset. Most customisation reads off it.
| What can be changed | What it affects | What it does not affect |
|---|---|---|
| Body size and entry count | Sheet development and entry positions | The gasket path, as long as the sealing land itself is unchanged |
| Entry type: plain, threaded or with a fitted gland | Wall thickness at the entry, and the thread form | The lid |
| Material: mild steel, stainless or aluminium | Corrosion behaviour, weight and the gasket choice | The external size |
| Protection rating | Gasket type, land design and the tolerances held on both | The external size |
| Fixing type and count | Lid stiffness and the torque sequence | The sealing land |
| Finish | Powder, or a specific stainless treatment | Nothing structural |
What Buyers Usually Ask About Junction Box IP67 Sheet Metal
How is the rating verified, and can you provide the test?
The rating is held by the design and confirmed by a water or pressure test against a stated method. Where a contract requires a certificate or a per-batch test, say so at enquiry stage, because the method has to be agreed before production rather than after.
Can the gasket be replaced on site?
Yes, if the gasket section and the land are unchanged and the sealing faces are clear. That is one reason the land is masked: a land with coating on it will not seal, and scraping it clean on site is how the surface gets damaged in the first place.
What usually causes a leak on a box that passed its test?
Fitting the lid with an uneven or over-tightened screw sequence, over-tightening a gland into a thin entry, or standing the assembly so water collects on the lid. The box is only one part of the seal, and the installation is the other.
On a sealed enclosure the gasket land and the aperture edges carry the rating, so both are checked before the box is packed. Tell us the required rating and the test method through the RFQ form so it is designed in rather than assessed afterwards. Related: metal enclosure manufacturing, welding and surface finishing.
What IP67 Actually Demands From a Fabricated Box
IP67 is a test result, not a feature you can specify into a drawing. It means the enclosure survived immersion under defined conditions, and whether a given box passes depends on details that are easy to get wrong: a continuous weld with no pinholes, a gasket groove that holds the seal at an even compression, cable entries that are sealed to the cable and not just to the box, and a lid that closes against a flat face. Most failures are not at the gasket – they are at a corner weld or at a gland that was not tightened to the cable diameter.
- TIG welding on 1.5 mm stainless gives a clean, continuous seam; the corner is where porosity hides, so the first piece gets examined there.
- Cable entries are specified as a count and a size. If the cable diameters vary, say so – a gland sized for one cable will not seal a smaller one.
- A quarter-turn lock is convenient but it does not pull a lid down evenly at four corners. On a sealed box the fixing layout matters as much as the lock.
Brushed Stainless Outdoors and Indoors
304 stainless in a brushed finish is the usual choice for a junction box that has to look presentable as well as survive. It holds up well in most industrial and indoor environments. Where the box goes near salt water, in a de-icing salt area, or into a process with chlorides, 316 is the safer material and it is worth specifying up front rather than discovering tea staining later. Finish direction is specified on the drawing – a linear brushed grain runs one way, and panels that meet on a corner look wrong if the grain does not line up.
Our scope is the box. The ingress rating is verified on finished units per order, and certification of any equipment installed inside it belongs to the equipment manufacturer or a third party they appoint. Send the drawing with the cable entry sizes, the material preference and the quantity; lead time is quoted after drawing review and process confirmation.
Payment Terms
How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.
- 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
- 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
- 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.
If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.
Questions buyers ask before sending drawings
The questions that come up most often before a project starts, answered the way we answer them by email.
What do you need from me to quote Junction Box IP67?
2D drawings as PDF, DWG or DXF, or 3D files as STEP, IGES or SolidWorks, together with material grade, sheet thickness, surface finish, quantity and destination country. If the drawing is not finished yet, send a photo, a sketch or the existing part instead — we review what can be measured from it and reply with the questions that still need answering.
How long does a quotation take?
Enquiries are answered within one business day. Simple laser-cut and bent parts are quoted within 24 hours. Welded frames, assembled units and multi-part structures are quoted after the drawing review and process confirmation, and the date is confirmed in our reply.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
Prototypes are made from a single piece and small batches of 10–50 pieces are routine. Prototype, first batch and repeat volume are quoted together so the numbers stay consistent as the project scales.
Can you work from a sample or a photo if I have no drawing?
Yes. Send the part itself, clear photographs with a rule or caliper in frame, or a dimensioned sketch. We measure what can be measured, list what is still undefined, and confirm it with you before production.
Need a Similar Part?
Most enquiries that start on a page like this are not an order for Junction Box IP67 — they are a search for a factory that can make something like it. Send us your drawing, 3D model or sample and we will review the manufacturing process and the quotation requirements, then come back with a process plan, a price and a lead time.
We work from 2D drawings, STEP / DWG / DXF / PDF files, or a physical sample if that is all you have.
No complete drawings yet? Describe the part, send photos or a sketch, or send a sample — we can start from there. Discuss your project.
Trade Terms and Delivery
We quote under the standard Incoterms your logistics team already works with, and build the packing and documentation around the one you choose.
- EXW — you collect from our Ningbo facility and run export clearance through your own forwarder.
- FOB Ningbo — we deliver to the vessel at Ningbo port and handle export clearance.
