Learn how agricultural wagon components are fabricated from sheet metal for farm transport. Discover material selection, load design, and real-world manufacturing.
Introduction
Agricultural wagons transport harvested crops, feed, and materials around farms, requiring robust components that withstand heavy loads and rough field conditions. These wagons have been used for generations and continue to be essential farm equipment. At Fulei Metal, we fabricate agricultural wagon components for equipment manufacturers across Europe and Australia.
Wagon Component Types
Wagon body panels form the sides and floor of farm wagons. Running gear brackets connect wagon bodies to axles and wheels. Tailgate components include hinges, latches, and reinforcement plates. Stake pocket components allow side stake installation for different load configurations. Hitch components connect wagons to tractors. Fender components protect wheels from debris. Brake mounting brackets attach brake systems.
Material Selection
Hot-dip galvanized steel is the standard material for agricultural wagon components, providing decades of corrosion resistance in outdoor farm environments. We use 2.0 to 5.0 mm sheet and tube depending on component load requirements. For premium wagons, stainless steel (grade 304) provides superior corrosion resistance. Powder coating over galvanizing provides additional protection and color options.
Design Considerations
Components must support heavy agricultural loads including harvested crops and feed. All edges must be smooth or reinforced to prevent injury to operators. Components must withstand rough field road vibration and shock loads. Corrosion protection must resist fertilizers, manure, and weather. Designs must be compatible with standard wagon dimensions. Hinge and latch components must operate reliably in dirty, outdoor conditions. Components must be easily replaceable for field repairs.
Fabrication Process
Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts component panels, brackets, and reinforcement plates from flat sheet stock with precise dimensions. CNC press brake machines form body panels, bracket profiles, and reinforcement components. Tube processing equipment cuts and notches frame tubes. Component assembly uses MIG welding for steel, with full-penetration welds at structural connections. Surface treatments include hot-dip galvanizing and powder coating.
Field Notes: Agricultural Wagon Components
Agricultural wagon components are structural parts on a vehicle that gets loaded beyond its nominal capacity and towed over ground that is not level, so the design loads are higher and less predictable than a road trailer. The parts that fail are usually the ones at the ends of the load path – the hinge, the tipping pivot, the drawbar attachment – rather than the panels of the body itself, and those are all locations where a load is concentrated into a small area. The fabrication answer is thickening and reinforcement at the fixings, gussets rather than plain corners, and forming holes that carry load rather than simply cutting them. Coating follows the environment: farm equipment is washed and left wet, so parts that stay outdoors are normally galvanized, with the caveat that a galvanized surface cannot be repaired in the field.
Conclusion
Agricultural wagon component fabrication requires heavy-duty engineering, corrosion protection, and field durability. Fulei Metal’s capabilities make us a trusted partner for farm transport equipment projects.
