How This Floor-Standing Server Rack Is Fabricated and Checked

A floor-standing rack is a structure that has to hold its shape with the doors off, the equipment in and the frame on levelling feet. Almost everything that goes wrong with a rack is decided before the panels go on.

StageWhat happensWhat is verified before the job moves on
Base and frame formingBase frame, uprights and top frame formed and cutSection straightness and the length of the uprights. Four uprights from one batch, so the frame cannot lean
Frame welding and squaringFrame welded in a fixture, not free on the floorDiagonals front-to-back and side-to-side, measured standing and again after the feet are fitted
Rail position and U pitch19-inch rails positioned and drilled to the U pitchRail face-to-face distance, and the pitch at the bottom, middle and top, because error accumulates over a tall frame
Panel and door fitSide panels, front and rear doors and top panel fittedPanel gaps, door alignment over the full height, and lock engagement
Cable and airflow provisionBase cut-outs, gland plates, brush entries, roof vent or fan apertureCut-out positions and burrs, and that the airflow path is not blocked by the frame or mounting plate

Short Answers on Floor Standing Server Rack Sheet Metal

What is the real load limit?

It is set by the base frame, the upright section and the feet, and it is a static figure. What limits a rack in practice is usually moving it loaded, or an uneven floor that puts the whole load on two feet. Give the equipment weight and how the rack will be moved, and the rating is confirmed against the construction.

Why does the U pitch matter beyond the first hole?

Because the pitch accumulates. A rack can be exact at the first U and a millimetre out by the fortieth, which is enough that a rail will not seat. We check the pitch at three heights rather than at the first hole only.

Can racks be bayed together on site?

They can, and the baying kit plus the side panel alignment have to be designed for it. Two racks made to a general tolerance will not always line up perfectly, so the joint is allowed for at design stage rather than corrected on site.

The frame and the rails are the parts that decide whether a rack is usable a year later, and both are set before coating. Send the equipment list and the load case through the RFQ form so the section and the base are sized to it. Related: enclosure manufacturing, welding and quality inspection.

What 1000 kg Refers to on a Floor-Standing Rack

A floor-standing rack rated at 1000 kg is carrying a distributed static load through four levelling feet across a footprint of 0.8 square metres. That is the honest description of the number, and it is worth knowing because the two failure modes on site are not covered by it. The first is a point load: equipment rails transfer load into the frame at the four rail mounting points, not evenly across the base. The second is the floor itself. A raised-floor tile in a data centre has its own rating, and a rack loaded to its capacity can exceed what the tile is rated for even though the rack is fine.

  • Levelling feet spread the load, but the load still arrives through the frame corners – the base section is what carries it, not the floor panel of the cabinet.
  • Castors are for positioning. A rack left standing on its castors is resting on four small contact patches and a wheel bearing, which is not what the rating describes.
  • If the rack is going into a room with a suspended or raised floor, confirm the tile rating and the stringer layout before specifying the load, not after.

Baying Two Racks Together Is a Fabrication Decision, Not a Site Fix

Racks are frequently ordered as single units and then bayed together on site, and that is where the trouble starts. Baying two frames requires the side hole patterns to line up within the same tolerance the rest of the cabinet is built to, and it requires the mating faces to be flat enough for the joint to close. If the two frames came from different batches, or one has been racked during transport, the baying bolts go in under strain and the row of cabinets is never quite straight.

The fix is simple and it has to happen at order stage: tell us the racks are going into a row and how many, and we produce the frames as a matched set with the baying provisions in the right place. Sharing side panels instead of doubling them up saves width and cost, but it changes the frame design, so it cannot be decided on site either. Gasket or brush strip between cabinets for airflow separation is a further decision that belongs on the drawing. All of these are free at quotation and expensive afterwards. Lead time is quoted after drawing review and process confirmation.

Payment Terms

How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.

  • 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
  • 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
  • 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.

If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.

Questions buyers ask before sending drawings

The questions that come up most often before a project starts, answered the way we answer them by email.

What do you need from me to quote Floor-Standing Server Rack?

2D drawings as PDF, DWG or DXF, or 3D files as STEP, IGES or SolidWorks, together with material grade, sheet thickness, surface finish, quantity and destination country. If the drawing is not finished yet, send a photo, a sketch or the existing part instead — we review what can be measured from it and reply with the questions that still need answering.

How long does a quotation take?

Enquiries are answered within one business day. Simple laser-cut and bent parts are quoted within 24 hours. Welded frames, assembled units and multi-part structures are quoted after the drawing review and process confirmation, and the date is confirmed in our reply.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

Prototypes are made from a single piece and small batches of 10–50 pieces are routine. Prototype, first batch and repeat volume are quoted together so the numbers stay consistent as the project scales.

Can you work from a sample or a photo if I have no drawing?

Yes. Send the part itself, clear photographs with a rule or caliper in frame, or a dimensioned sketch. We measure what can be measured, list what is still undefined, and confirm it with you before production.

Need a Similar Part?

Most enquiries that start on a page like this are not an order for Floor-Standing Server Rack — they are a search for a factory that can make something like it. Send us your drawing, 3D model or sample and we will review the manufacturing process and the quotation requirements, then come back with a process plan, a price and a lead time.

We work from 2D drawings, STEP / DWG / DXF / PDF files, or a physical sample if that is all you have.

Quotation Time

We quote from your drawings. How long that takes depends on what the part asks for:

  • Simple parts — quoted within 24 hours. Laser-cut blanks and bent components, supplied with complete 2D or 3D drawings. Mon–Fri, GMT+8.
  • Complex assemblies — quoted after the drawing review. Payment kiosks, multi-part welded frames, enclosures with purchased hardware, or anything needing a coating or assembly trial. We confirm a quotation date once the scope is clear.

Production lead time is quoted separately, after drawing review and process confirmation. Send your drawings.
