Material Selection

Surface treatments include brushed or polished finishes for stainless steel, zinc plating for steel, and powder coating.

Field Notes: Furniture Hinges in Sheet Metal

A sheet metal hinge is a mechanism made to a tight tolerance and supplied in volume, so the two questions that decide the price are the tooling route and the pin fit. At low volume the leaf is laser cut and formed individually, which is flexible and carries a higher unit cost; once the volume justifies a press tool, the blanking cost per part falls sharply but the tool has to be paid for once, and that trade-off is what sits behind a minimum order figure. The pin fit is the performance question: a hinge with play between the pin and the knuckle will let a door drop at the far edge once it has weight on it, and the play is a function of the bore and the pin rather than of the material grade. This is why cycling and play are checked per batch rather than on a sample at the start of the run.
