What Livestock Water Trough Fabrication Has to Survive

Large-capacity water troughs provide reliable water access for livestock in fields, paddocks, and barns. These troughs must hold significant volumes of water, resist animal damage, and maintain water quality in all weather conditions. At Fulei Metal, we fabricate water troughs for livestock operations across Europe, Australia, and North America.

Water Trough Design

Field troughs typically hold 200 to 1,000 liters, providing water for herds between refills. Trough design must prevent tipping by animals, with wide bases and low centers of gravity. Trough profiles must allow animals to drink comfortably while preventing contamination from feed, manure, or debris. Drain plugs are essential for regular cleaning and maintenance. Valve housings protect automatic fill valves from animal damage while providing maintenance access.

Picking Material for Livestock Water Trough Fabrication

Stainless steel (grade 304) is the preferred material for water troughs in direct contact with water. It does not rust, is easy to clean, and does not impart taste or contamination. For cost-sensitive applications, galvanized steel provides adequate service for structural components. For enhanced appearance and additional corrosion protection, powder coating over galvanized steel is available.

Tolerances and Details on Livestock Water Trough Fabrication

Troughs must maintain water quality by preventing contamination with protective edges and drainage features. In cold climates, troughs must prevent freezing through insulation, heating elements, or constant-flow systems. Troughs must be designed for easy cleaning with smooth interiors, drain plugs, and minimal crevices. Trough capacity must be adequate for the herd size, with refill rates matching animal consumption. Trough height and rim design must be appropriate for the animal species.

How Livestock Water Trough Fabrication Is Fabricated

Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts trough body components from flat sheet stock with precise dimensions. CNC press brake machines form trough bodies with watertight seams and appropriate profiles. Trough assembly uses TIG welding for stainless steel producing watertight, hygienic seams and MIG welding for galvanized structural components. Stainless steel components may be electropolished, and galvanized components are hot-dip galvanized after fabrication.

Our assembly team installs valve housings, fill valves, drain plugs, overflow fittings, and heating elements. Each trough undergoes leak testing and valve operation verification.

Field Troughs: Ice, Sun and a Reachable Drain

A field trough spends its life outdoors, full of water, subject to freezing in winter and direct sun in summer. That combination sets the design: the trough has to be able to take the expansion of ice without splitting a weld, the drain has to be reachable and clearable with the trough in place, and any part that is buried or set in concrete has to be protected at the point where the coating is most likely to be damaged on installation. Galvanized parts are never stacked wet before dispatch either – white rust that forms in transit arrives looking like a defect, and it is a claim waiting to happen.

From Drawing to First Article on Livestock Water Trough Fabrication

Large-capacity water trough fabrication requires expertise in hygienic design, freeze protection, and structural engineering. Fulei Metal’s experience in livestock equipment fabrication makes us a trusted partner for water trough projects.

Fulei Metal builds components like this in-house. The DFM engineering review page explains how the process is set up and checked, while custom sheet metal fabrication covers the materials and finishes we normally run. Related reading: Feed Trough Fabrication.

Most enquiries that start on a page like this are not an order for Livestock Water Trough Fabrication — they are a search for a factory that can make something like it. Send us your drawing, 3D model or sample and we will review the manufacturing process and the quotation requirements, then come back with a process plan, a price and a lead time.

We work from 2D drawings, STEP / DWG / DXF / PDF files, or a physical sample if that is all you have.

Trade Terms and Delivery

We quote under the standard Incoterms your logistics team already works with, and build the packing and documentation around the one you choose.

  • EXW — you collect from our Ningbo facility and run export clearance through your own forwarder.
  • FOB Ningbo — we deliver to the vessel at Ningbo port and handle export clearance.
  • CIF — we cover carriage and insurance to your named destination port.
  • DDP — we handle carriage, insurance, import clearance and duties through to your door.

Send your destination country, target delivery date and preferred trade term together with the drawing. Request a quotation.

Payment Terms

How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.

  • 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
  • 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
  • 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.

If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.

Quotation Time

We quote from your drawings. How long that takes depends on what the part asks for:

  • Simple parts — quoted within 24 hours. Laser-cut blanks and bent components, supplied with complete 2D or 3D drawings. Mon–Fri, GMT+8.
  • Complex assemblies — quoted after the drawing review. Payment kiosks, multi-part welded frames, enclosures with purchased hardware, or anything needing a coating or assembly trial. We confirm a quotation date once the scope is clear.

Production lead time is quoted separately, after drawing review and process confirmation. Send your drawings.
