Telescopic Fence Fabrication: Flexible Livestock Containment

Learn how telescopic and adjustable fence systems are fabricated for flexible livestock management. Discover extension mechanisms, material selection, and real-world farm applications.

Introduction

Telescopic fences and adjustable barrier systems provide flexible livestock containment that can be extended, retracted, or reconfigured as needed. These systems are valuable for temporary holding areas, variable-width races, and adaptable pen configurations. At Fulei Metal, we fabricate telescopic fence systems for livestock operations across Europe and Australia.

Telescopic Fence Applications

Adjustable race systems use telescopic panels allowing race width adjustment without disassembly. Temporary holding pens use telescopic connectors for quick assembly at various angles. Variable-width gateways use telescopic gate panels that extend or retract to fill openings of various widths. Crowd gate systems use telescopic or sliding mechanisms to move animals forward through races. Show and auction equipment uses telescopic panels that are lightweight but strong for portability.

Design Considerations

The telescopic extension mechanism must operate smoothly in dirty, outdoor environments with appropriate clearances and sealed bearings. Panels must maintain structural strength at full extension with appropriate overlap length. Locking mechanisms must lock positively at each extension position using spring-loaded pins, cam locks, or lever-operated latches. Telescopic mechanisms are vulnerable to corrosion, requiring galvanized steel with anti-seize compound on sliding surfaces. Systems must not have pinch points or protruding hardware that could injure animals.

Material Selection

Hot-dip galvanized steel is the standard material with zinc coating providing corrosion resistance. Powder coating over galvanizing provides additional protection and smoother sliding surfaces. For telescopic mechanisms requiring smooth, corrosion-free sliding, stainless steel components resist corrosion and galling.

Fabrication Process

Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts telescopic mechanism components, locking plates, and mounting brackets with dimensional accuracy directly affecting sliding operation. Steel tubes are precisely dimensioned for telescopic sections with appropriate clearance. CNC tube bending creates consistent bends in inner and outer sections. Component assembly uses MIG welding with care to avoid weld spatter on sliding surfaces. Telescopic components are hot-dip galvanized, with sliding surfaces receiving anti-seize compound.

Our assembly team assembles telescopic sections, installs locking mechanisms, and verifies smooth operation throughout the full extension range. Each unit undergoes functional testing including extension, retraction, and locking engagement.

Case Study: Telescopic Fencing for a US Livestock Producer

Telescopic and adjustable fencing made for a large US livestock producer since 2016 has been part of the galvanized range that runs at roughly 10,000 parts a year. An adjustable fence adds a tolerance problem to a normal panel: the sliding or pinning elements have to work after galvanizing, and galvanizing adds thickness to every surface it touches. A pin that fits a hole comfortably in bare steel will not enter the same hole once both parts are coated. That is why the holes in adjustable assemblies are either cut oversize to a coating allowance or drilled after galvanizing and treated at the cut. Slots, where they are used, are checked for full travel on a galvanized sample rather than on the first bare part off the line.

Conclusion

Telescopic fence fabrication requires precision manufacturing, understanding of sliding mechanism design, and corrosion protection expertise. Fulei Metal’s experience in livestock equipment fabrication makes us a trusted partner for telescopic fence projects.
