Slatted Floor Support Design
Support frames must carry the weight of animals standing on the floor, which can exceed 500 kg per square meter for cattle. Frames must also support equipment loads from tractors, feed carts, and cleaning equipment. The support span between frame members affects floor panel capacity, with typical spans of 1.0 to 2.0 meters. Frame design must accommodate the specific floor panel type, whether concrete, plastic, or cast iron, with precise dimensions for panel support and alignment.
Material Selection
Hot-dip galvanized steel is the standard material for slatted floor supports. The zinc coating provides essential corrosion resistance in the highly corrosive environment beneath slatted floors, where manure, urine, and moisture create aggressive conditions. We use 2.0 to 4.0 mm thick steel tube and angle, depending on the span and load requirements. For the most corrosive environments, stainless steel (grade 304) provides superior longevity.
Design Considerations
Support frames must be designed to prevent sagging under load with appropriate beam sizing and intermediate supports. Frames must resist corrosion from manure and moisture beneath the floor, requiring galvanizing after fabrication. Frame design must accommodate thermal expansion and contraction of floor panels. Fabrication Process
Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts frame components, bracket plates, and mounting hardware from flat sheet stock. Steel tubes and angles are cut to length and notched for frame assembly. CNC press brake machines form reinforcement components and bracket profiles. Frame assembly uses MIG welding with continuous welds for structural integrity. All frame assemblies are hot-dip galvanized after fabrication to coat all surfaces including internal tube surfaces.
Case Study: Slatted Floor Supports for a US Producer
Slatted floor support steel for a US livestock producer belongs to the galvanized programme running since 2016. The tolerance on this part is tighter than on fencing, and the reason is worth stating: the beams carry the floor, and the floor has to finish level across the whole house. A pocket or notch that is a few millimetres out at one beam becomes a step in the floor surface by the time the slats are laid, and a step in a floor is a welfare and cleanliness problem as well as a construction one. Support steel is therefore held to the tighter of the two tolerances on the drawing, and it is checked after galvanizing rather than before – long, thin sections move in the zinc bath.
