Rust-Proof Packaging for Export Shipping: VCI and Moisture Control

Prevent corrosion during international shipping with rust-proof packaging. Learn about VCI technology, desiccants, moisture barriers, and export packaging best practices.

Introduction

Corrosion during shipping is a major concern for sheet metal products, especially for export shipments that face long transit times, ocean humidity, and temperature fluctuations. At Fulei Metal, we implement comprehensive rust-proof packaging strategies to ensure that metal products arrive corrosion-free at their international destinations.

Understanding Shipping Corrosion

Causes of Shipping Corrosion

Metal corrosion during shipping is caused by: moisture in the air, temperature changes causing condensation, salt air in ocean shipping, acidic or corrosive atmospheres, contact with moisture-absorbing materials. Even products with surface treatment can corrode if moisture penetrates packaging.

The Container Environment

Ocean shipping containers experience: temperature cycles from day to night. Humidity levels up to 100%. Condensation (container rain) on walls and ceiling. Salt-laden air in ocean transport. Long transit times of 2-6 weeks. These conditions create an aggressive corrosion environment.

VCI Technology

What is VCI?

Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) is a chemical compound that vaporizes and forms a protective molecular layer on metal surfaces. This layer prevents the electrochemical reactions that cause corrosion. VCI is effective for steel, aluminum, copper, and other metals.

VCI Products

VCI paper: kraft paper impregnated with VCI chemicals. Used to wrap metal parts. Provides both physical and chemical protection. Available in different sizes and weights. VCI film: polyethylene film with VCI additives. Used as wrapping or bags. Provides moisture barrier and corrosion protection. Transparent for easy identification. VCI bags: pre-made bags in various sizes. Quick and easy to use. Provide sealed environment. VCI emitters: small devices placed inside sealed packages. Provide corrosion protection for enclosed spaces. VCI liquids: applied directly to metal surfaces. Provide temporary corrosion protection.

How VCI Works

VCI chemicals vaporize from the carrier material. Vapors fill the enclosed package space. VCI molecules adsorb onto metal surfaces. Protective layer forms, blocking corrosion reactions. Layer is only a few molecules thick. Does not affect appearance or properties. VCI protection is reversible: when package is opened, VCI evaporates.

VCI Effectiveness

Effective for: steel, cast iron, aluminum, copper, brass, zinc, galvanized steel. Protection duration: up to 2 years in sealed package. Temperature range: effective from 0°C to 60°C. Does not protect: already corroded surfaces, surfaces with standing water, surfaces in direct contact with moisture.

Desiccants

Purpose

Desiccants absorb moisture from the air inside packaging, reducing humidity below the corrosion threshold. By maintaining low humidity, desiccants prevent condensation and corrosion.

Types of Desiccants

Silica gel: most common desiccant. High moisture absorption capacity. Available in small packets or bulk. Can be regenerated by heating. Clay desiccant: natural, low cost. Lower absorption capacity than silica gel. Suitable for general use. Molecular sieve: highest absorption capacity. Effective at high temperatures and low humidity. Most expensive. Container desiccants: large desiccant bags for shipping containers. Absorb several liters of water. Hang inside container.

Desiccant Sizing

Calculate desiccant quantity based on: package volume, package material moisture vapor transmission rate, expected transit time, expected temperature and humidity, product moisture sensitivity. Undersized desiccant will be exhausted before transit ends. Oversized desiccant is wasteful.

Desiccant Indicators

Humidity indicator cards: change color at specific humidity levels. Placed inside package. Verify that humidity stayed below threshold. Indicator plug: mounted on package exterior. Read without opening package.

Moisture Barrier Packaging

Barrier Materials

Aluminum foil barrier bags: excellent moisture barrier. Used for critical products. Higher cost. Polyethylene film: moderate moisture barrier. Used for general protection. Low cost. Metallized film: good moisture barrier. Cost-effective alternative to aluminum foil. Co-extruded films: multiple layers for optimized properties.

Sealing

Heat sealing: creates airtight seal. Most reliable method. Use continuous heat sealer for consistent seals. Seal width: typically 10mm or wider. Seal integrity: verify with visual inspection or dye penetration test.

Vacuum Packaging

Remove air from package before sealing. Reduces moisture inside package. Provides visual confirmation of seal integrity. Not suitable for all products (may cause deformation). Modified atmosphere: replace air with inert gas (nitrogen). Eliminates oxygen for corrosion prevention.

Export Packaging Strategy

Multi-Layer Approach

Layer 1: VCI paper or film directly on metal surface. Layer 2: cushioning material (foam, bubble wrap). Layer 3: moisture barrier bag with desiccant. Layer 4: outer packaging (carton, crate). Layer 5: pallet with stretch wrap. This multi-layer approach provides redundant protection.

Container Loading

Container desiccants: hang 4-8 kg of desiccant per container. Monitor with humidity indicator. Block and brace: prevent product movement during transport. Load evenly: distribute weight in container. Avoid direct contact with container walls: condensation on walls can wet packaging.

Documentation

Include packing list inside and outside package. Include corrosion protection instructions for receiver. Include humidity indicator card inside package. Document packaging materials used for quality records.

Product-Specific Considerations

Bare Metal Products

Highest corrosion risk. Require VCI paper or film. Require moisture barrier. Require desiccant. May require rust preventive oil in addition to VCI.

Powder-Coated Products

Lower corrosion risk but exposed metal edges can corrode. VCI paper on exposed metal. Moisture barrier for long transit. Desiccant for humidity control. Protective film on coated surfaces.

Galvanized Products

Zinc coating provides corrosion protection but white rust can form in high humidity. VCI paper to prevent white rust. Moisture barrier to prevent condensation. Desiccant for humidity control. Separators between galvanized surfaces.

Stainless Steel Products

Generally corrosion-resistant but can stain or pit in corrosive environments. VCI paper for stainless steel. Moisture barrier for long transit. Desiccant for humidity control. Avoid contact with carbon steel (contamination).

Quality Verification

Package Testing

Humidity testing: place packaged product in humidity chamber. Verify no corrosion after specified time. Drop testing: verify package integrity after impact. Vibration testing: verify package integrity after simulated transport.

Inspection

Verify VCI material is correctly applied. Verify desiccant is present and correct quantity. Verify moisture barrier is sealed. Verify humidity indicator is included. Document inspection results.
