Cutting Thin Sheet Without Distorting It
Thin sheet behaves differently from plate. Heat input from the laser, the way a blank is nested and supported, and the order of the cut all decide whether a thin panel leaves flat or arrives with waviness that only shows up after bending or coating.
We plan the cut around the part geometry rather than around the sheet size. Small holes are pierced before long contours, narrow webs are cut last, and nesting leaves enough material around the part so it does not drop or tip while being released. For thin stainless and aluminium, cut sequence and support matter more than cutting speed.
Tolerance on thin parts is governed as much by handling as by the machine. Thin blanks are kept flat in storage and transport between cutting and the next operation, because a bent blank cannot be recovered by re-cutting.
Nesting, Piercing and Cut Sequence
Drawings arrive as DXF, DWG or STEP files. Flat patterns are checked for closed contours, duplicated lines and hole sizes smaller than the material thickness — the most common reasons a file has to go back to the customer before cutting starts.
Nesting is arranged so pierce points and lead-ins fall where they will not show on the finished part. The cut runs from internal features to the outer contour, with the sheet supported so thin parts stay in place at release.
Cut parts are deburred if coating, welding or assembly follows, then identified by part number and material before moving on. Thin parts are stacked and packed flat rather than bundled loose.
What We Verify After Cutting
Dimensional checks follow the drawing: critical hole positions, slot widths and overall blank size are measured on the first part and at intervals through the run.
Edge quality is checked for dross and consistency, since a heavy burr on thin material is harder to remove without rounding the edge. Flatness is checked before parts leave the cutting area, while there is still time to correct the setup.
Where a project needs documented inspection, incoming material checks, first-article inspection, in-process dimensional checks and final inspection photos can be provided. Mark the dimensions that matter on the drawing so they are checked rather than assumed.
Work That Comes Through Thin-Gauge Cutting
- Thin covers, panels and faceplates for enclosures
- Blanks for brackets that will be bent and welded
- Perforated and patterned panels for ventilation
- Copper and aluminium parts for electrical applications
- Prototype blanks cut before tooling is committed
What Speeds Up a Cutting Quote
- DXF, DWG or STEP file of the flat pattern
- Material and thickness, including temper for aluminium
- Holes or slots with tolerances marked critical
- Whether deburring, bending or coating follows cutting
- Quantity for prototype and for the first production batch
Thin Sheet Cutting Questions
Can you cut from our DXF file?
Yes. DXF, DWG and STEP files are accepted, and we check the flat pattern for closed contours before cutting.
How do you keep thin parts flat?
Through cut sequence, nesting and sheet support rather than by slowing the machine down. Send the drawing and thickness and we will confirm the approach for that geometry.
Can you cut copper and aluminium?
Yes. Both are cut routinely; aluminium temper and copper reflectivity affect the parameters used.
Do you deburr after cutting?
Yes. Deburring is available before coating, welding or assembly, and is recommended for parts that will be handled.

Trade Terms and Delivery
We quote under the standard Incoterms your logistics team already works with, and build the packing and documentation around the one you choose.
- EXW — you collect from our Ningbo facility and run export clearance through your own forwarder.
- FOB Ningbo — we deliver to the vessel at Ningbo port and handle export clearance.
- CIF — we cover carriage and insurance to your named destination port.
- DDP — we handle carriage, insurance, import clearance and duties through to your door.
Send your destination country, target delivery date and preferred trade term together with the drawing. Request a quotation.
Payment Terms
How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.
- 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
- 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
- 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.
If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.
Scope of This Page: 0.5 mm to 5 mm
This page covers thin sheet from 0.5 mm to 5 mm, the range where most OEM panels, brackets and covers are cut, and where distortion, burr height and pierce marks decide whether a part is usable.
Plate above 5 mm up to 18 mm is a different process window: pierce time, edge taper and bending force change the plan and the price. That work runs through the general service page: CNC laser cutting service.
Not sure which band your part is in? Send the drawing with the material and thickness and we will tell you. Send your drawings.
Quotation Time
We quote from your drawings. How long that takes depends on what the part asks for:
- Simple parts — quoted within 24 hours. Laser-cut blanks and bent components, supplied with complete 2D or 3D drawings. Mon–Fri, GMT+8.
- Complex assemblies — quoted after the drawing review. Payment kiosks, multi-part welded frames, enclosures with purchased hardware, or anything needing a coating or assembly trial. We confirm a quotation date once the scope is clear.
Production lead time is quoted separately, after drawing review and process confirmation. Send your drawings.
