A Battery Enclosure on a Two-Wheeler Is a Vibration Problem

A battery enclosure for a motorcycle or a two-wheeler EV spends its service life on a machine that vibrates, hits potholes, and gets ridden every day. The enclosure is not just a box holding a battery, it is the interface carrying that battery’s mass into the frame through a small number of mounting tabs. That makes the tabs the critical feature. A tab that is stiff enough statically can still crack, because the load is not static – it cycles with every bump, and cracks start where the section changes, which is exactly where a tab meets the wall.

  • Radiused corners at the tab root cost nothing on a laser-cut part and remove the sharp internal corner that a crack starts from.
  • The tab-to-wall joint is a weld, and it is a fatigue joint. Continuous welds distribute the load; a short weld at the same location concentrates it.
  • Cable openings need strain relief. A cable that can move at the entry point will fatigue its own insulation and eventually the gland or grommet.

Thin-Wall Enclosures Get Stiffness From Form, Not Thickness

The thickness range on this kind of enclosure runs from about 0.8 mm upward, and the temptation when something flexes is to go up a gauge. On a two-wheeler that is usually the wrong answer, because weight goes to the vehicle’s range and handling. The cheaper route is form: a return flange along a free edge, a bead pressed into a large flat panel, a hemmed lid opening. All three add stiffness where it is needed without adding material across the whole part.

Form also solves the fit problem that thin sheet creates. A 0.8 mm lid closing against a 0.8 mm body has very little material for a gasket to compress against and very little resistance to the bowing that follows welding. A formed edge on both halves gives the seal a flat face and makes the closure consistent part to part. If you are working from a sample rather than a drawing, say so – we can reverse-engineer the geometry, but the material grade and the finish have to be specified, not guessed. Lead time is quoted after drawing review and process confirmation.

What a Battery Enclosure Has to Survive

A battery enclosure on a two-wheeler carries a load a static cabinet never sees: vibration, road water, and a mounting point that flexes with the frame. The failure modes are predictable — cracked welds at the mounting tabs, water finding the cable entry, and coating lifting where an edge was not prepared.

We start from the mounting. Tab position, tab thickness and how the enclosure is fixed to the frame decide how load travels into the box, and that usually determines whether a seam holds. Cable and vent openings come next, because they are both a sealing problem and a sharp-edge problem.

Material follows the environment: SPCC and SECC for a painted enclosure in a protected mounting position, SUS304 where the enclosure is exposed or where no paint is wanted.

Forming, Welding and Sealing a Small Enclosure

Blanks are laser cut and bent on CNC press brakes. Small enclosures are formed so the seam falls where it can be welded and finished, rather than across a face that has to stay flat.

Seams are MIG or TIG welded depending on thickness and appearance, and mounting tabs are welded in fixture so their position stays consistent part to part. Weld spatter and sharp edges are removed before coating.

Parts are powder coated to the specified colour, with cable openings and mounting faces checked afterwards. Where an enclosure has to resist water ingress, the drawing should state it, so gasket seats, cable gland provisions or drain features are quoted as part of the job.

Checks Before a Battery Enclosure Ships

Mounting tab position and hole centres are checked on the first part, since these decide whether the enclosure fits the frame without being forced into place.

Weld seams are reviewed for continuity and for spatter that would interfere with coating or with the battery tray. Coating coverage is checked, including at edges and inside openings where coverage is easiest to miss.

Incoming material checks, first-article inspection, in-process dimensional checks and final inspection photos can be provided. If your project specifies an ingress protection rating or a coating requirement, send it with the drawing: the enclosure can be built and finished for that purpose, while the rating itself is verified on the assembled product.

Enclosures and Parts for Two-Wheeler Programs

  • Battery enclosures with mounting tabs and cable openings
  • Controller and charger housings
  • Covers and access panels for frame-mounted components
  • Prototype enclosures for fit checks on a new frame
  • Replacement enclosures for existing models

What Speeds Up an Enclosure Quote

  • Drawing or sample, with mounting tab positions
  • Material, thickness and finish
  • Cable and vent opening sizes and positions
  • Whether the enclosure needs sealing provisions
  • Quantity for prototype and for production

Battery Enclosure Questions

Can you build from a sample instead of a drawing?

Yes. Send the sample and we will measure it and produce a drawing for confirmation before production.

How do you keep mounting tabs consistent?

Tabs are welded in fixture, and tab position is checked on the first part.

Can you add drainage or cable gland provisions?

Yes, when the requirement is on the drawing so the openings and seats are quoted as part of the work.

Can the enclosure be sealed against water?

The enclosure can be built and finished for that purpose. A protection rating is verified on the assembled product rather than on the metal box alone.

Trade Terms and Delivery

We quote under the standard Incoterms your logistics team already works with, and build the packing and documentation around the one you choose.

  • EXW — you collect from our Ningbo facility and run export clearance through your own forwarder.
  • FOB Ningbo — we deliver to the vessel at Ningbo port and handle export clearance.
  • CIF — we cover carriage and insurance to your named destination port.
  • DDP — we handle carriage, insurance, import clearance and duties through to your door.

Send your destination country, target delivery date and preferred trade term together with the drawing. Request a quotation.

Payment Terms

How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.

  • 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
  • 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
  • 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.

If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.

Quotation Time

We quote from your drawings. How long that takes depends on what the part asks for:

  • Simple parts — quoted within 24 hours. Laser-cut blanks and bent components, supplied with complete 2D or 3D drawings. Mon–Fri, GMT+8.
  • Complex assemblies — quoted after the drawing review. Payment kiosks, multi-part welded frames, enclosures with purchased hardware, or anything needing a coating or assembly trial. We confirm a quotation date once the scope is clear.

Production lead time is quoted separately, after drawing review and process confirmation. Send your drawings.
