IP66 Enclosures: What the Rating Means and What It Does Not
IP66 is a test result on a sample, not a promise about your cabinet. It means the enclosure withstood powerful water jets in a laboratory. Whether yours does depends on the seal compression, the latch count, the gasket material and whether the cable entries were designed in — none of which is implied by the number.
Fulei Metal builds IP66-capable enclosures from customer drawings in mild steel, stainless 304/316 and aluminium, in Ningbo, China, since 2016. We build the mechanical envelope your sealing design specifies. We do not issue IP certificates.
What IP66 actually tests
| Digit | Protects against | Test |
|---|---|---|
| First: 6 | Dust | Dust-tight. No ingress of dust in a talc-filled chamber under vacuum |
| Second: 6 | Water | Powerful jets — a 12.5 mm nozzle at roughly 100 litres/minute from 3 metres |
Compare the water digit across the range, because the jump is large:
| Rating | Water test | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| IP54 | Splashing, from any direction | Indoor, or outdoors under cover. Not for direct rain |
| IP65 | Low-pressure jets, 6.3 mm nozzle | Outdoor general purpose; rain from any angle |
| IP66 | Powerful jets, 12.5 mm nozzle | Washdown, hose cleaning, heavy weather, coastal |
| IP67 | Immersion, 1 m for 30 minutes | Temporary flooding — a different design problem entirely |
IP65 to IP66 is a doubling of water pressure and a doubling of nozzle size. It is not a small step, and a cabinet that passes IP65 will usually fail IP66 without changes.
The five things that decide whether it holds
| # | Factor | What goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Seal compression | A gasket laid flat in a channel compresses unevenly — the middle bows out, the corners stay open |
| 2 | Latch count and position | One latch in the middle of a tall door cannot hold compression along the full height |
| 3 | Gasket material and profile | A sponge gasket compresses but does not seal against a jet; the profile matters as much as the material |
| 4 | Cable entries | Every penetration is a leak path; a flat patch plate leaks along its own face |
| 5 | Build quality at the corners | A weld bead, a burr or a paint ridge inside the gasket channel creates a channel for water |
Design features we build for IP66
- Captured-channel gasket — the seal sits in a machined or folded channel rather than glued to a flat face, so it cannot be pushed out under pressure
- Door overlap and drip edge — water is directed away from the seam rather than into it
- Three or more latches on tall doors, positioned to distribute compression
- Gland plates built into the wall with a flange and a sealed joint, not bolted on as a patch
- Continuous welds with the internal bead dressed flush inside the gasket channel
- Sloped roof with an overhang so water cannot pond on the top seam
- Masking of threads and mating faces before coating, so paint ridges do not sit inside the seal path
Material choice for IP66 service
| Environment | Recommended | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor washdown | SPCC mild steel, powder coated | Cheapest route; coating must mask the gasket channel |
| Outdoor, non-coastal | SPCC or 304 | 304 if the cabinet is exposed and appearance matters |
| Coastal, de-icing salt | Stainless 316 | 304 pits at welds in chloride air; 316 does not |
| Food, pharmaceutical | Stainless 304 or 316 | Continuous welds, no trap corners, passivated |
| Weight-sensitive | Aluminium 5052 / 6061 | Lighter, conducts heat; sealing design is the same |
What we do not do
We do not issue IP certificates or test reports. Ingress protection is verified on the finished equipment by you or the certification body. What we provide is the enclosure built to your specified sealing design, with the dimensional and process records showing it was built that way — captured channel, latch positions, gasket profile, dressed weld beads.
If your acceptance requires a tested sample, tell us at quotation stage. We can build a first article to the sealing design and let you have it tested before the batch runs. That is a cheaper way to find a problem than discovering it at incoming inspection.
The seal is a wearing part
An IP66 rating is measured on a new gasket. Gaskets harden, shrink and take a set over years of compression and UV exposure. Two consequences for the drawing:
- Specify a replaceable seal. A gasket glued into a channel cannot be replaced in the field; a captured, retained seal can. It costs the same to build and keeps the cabinet serviceable.
- Specify the gasket material. EPDM resists UV and weathering better than most alternatives in outdoor service. If you do not specify, we will propose it.
What to put on the drawing
- IP rating and the test condition — “IP66” alone is ambiguous; say whether it is tested as-built or hand-closed
- Gasket material, profile and retention method — and that it must be replaceable
- Latch count and positions on each door
- Gland plate positions, sizes and entry direction
- Weld standard inside the gasket channel — dressed flush, or ground
- Roof form and overhang
- Coating masking list — gasket channel, threads, mating faces, earth points
- Whether a tested first article is required before batch production

Frequently asked questions
Can you guarantee IP66?
We can build to the design that achieves it, and we will tell you what your drawing holds. We do not guarantee the rating itself, because it is verified by test on the finished product — and that test is not ours to run or certify.
Why did our previous IP66 cabinet fail inspection?
Usually one of three: a flat-laid gasket that compressed unevenly, too few latches to hold compression along a tall door, or cable entries that were drilled and patched rather than designed. All three are visible in the drawing if you know to look. Send us the drawing and we will tell you which applies.
Is IP66 the same as waterproof?
No. IP66 is resistance to powerful jets, tested briefly. It is not immersion — that is IP67 or IP68 — and it is not permanent, because the seal ages. A cabinet that is going to be submerged, or that will be hosed at close range for years, needs a different conversation.
Does a higher gauge help the IP rating?
Only indirectly. A thicker door resists bowing, and bowing is what opens a seal. But the rating is decided by the seal design, the latch count and the build quality in the gasket channel — not by how much metal is in the door.
What lead times apply?
Simple samples 3–7 days. Complex first articles 15–20 days. Production batches 25–35 days, quoted after drawing review. Freight is quoted separately to your port.
Do you hold ISO 9001 certification?
Our quality system is documented to ISO 9001. We do not hold a third-party ISO 9001 certificate and do not claim one. Third-party audit evidence is available under NDA: TÜV Rheinland MIC-ASI243729 and Bureau Veritas MIC-ASR263630.
Send the drawing and the rating
Send the drawing with the IP rating you need, the environment, and whether the seal has to be replaceable. We will tell you what your design holds and what would have to change for the next rating up — before the metal is cut, not after.
