Walk through any big-box store and you will see garage carts at wildly different price points. The difference is not marketing — it is the invisible details of steel gauge, weld quality, fasteners and finish. If you are importing or sourcing carts for your own brand, here is how to judge a supplier before you commit tooling money.
Steel Gauge: Feel the Weight
Thin steel is cheap and light, but it flexes, dents and corrodes. A dependable cart uses:
- Frame tubing: 1.5–2.0 mm wall thickness, welded — not just tab-folded.
- Shelves: 1.0–1.5 mm, with formed flanges that add stiffness without adding weight.
- Checklist: lift the frame and press on a shelf center. Excessive flex means the gauge is too thin for the rated load.
Weld Quality: Where Carts Die
Most cart failures happen at weld joints — cracked frame corners and broken shelf brackets. Inspect for:
- Full penetration at load-bearing joints, not just surface tacks.
- No porosity or spatter — signs of rushed, unskilled welding.
- Consistent, clean welds across the whole batch, not just the sample.
- Grinding and finishing at visible joints for a professional appearance.

Fasteners and Hardware
Bolted carts rely on the quality of every nut and bolt. Specify zinc-plated or stainless fasteners, locking washers or nylon-insert nuts at vibration-prone joints, and blind rivets only where appropriate. Cheap fasteners corrode, loosen and fail — a warranty headache that far outweighs the savings.
Finish: More Than Cosmetic
Powder coating is the standard for garage carts. Demand 60–100 µm film thickness with proper pre-treatment. Ask your supplier about salt-spray test results (ISO 9227) and edge coverage — rust always starts at cut edges and sharp corners.
Supplier Capability Checklist
When evaluating a fabrication partner, verify: laser cutting + CNC bending in-house, qualified welders, a real QC process with dimensional reports, and experience shipping batch orders (not just samples). That is the difference between a vendor and a manufacturing partner. Fulei Metal ticks all of these boxes — request our factory audit pack to see for yourself.
