Drying Rack Fabrication: Laundry Solutions from Sheet Metal

Learn how laundry drying racks are fabricated from sheet metal for durable, foldable designs. Discover material selection, hinge mechanisms, and real-world products.

Introduction

Laundry drying racks provide energy-efficient clothes drying with space-saving designs that fold flat when not in use. Metal drying racks offer superior durability and weight capacity compared to plastic alternatives. At Fulei Metal, we fabricate drying rack components for home goods brands across Europe and Japan.

Drying Rack Types

Wall-mounted folding racks collapse against the wall when not in use, expanding to provide multiple drying rods. Freestanding folding racks use scissor-action frames that fold flat for storage. Ceiling-mounted drying racks lower for loading and raise out of the way during drying. Balcony drying racks mount to balcony railings or ceilings for outdoor drying. Over-door drying racks hook over doors for temporary drying space.

Material Selection

Powder-coated steel provides cost-effective drying racks with adequate corrosion resistance for indoor use. We use 1.0 to 1.5 mm steel tube and sheet. Stainless steel (grade 304) provides premium durability and corrosion resistance, particularly for outdoor or humid bathroom applications. Aluminum offers light weight for ceiling-mounted and wall-mounted racks where weight affects installation and operation.

Design Considerations

Drying racks must support the weight of wet clothes, which can be 2 to 3 kg per meter of rod. Folding mechanisms must operate smoothly with proper hinge design and locking at extended positions. When folded, racks must be compact for storage. Rod spacing must accommodate various garment types without contact between items. All edges must be smooth to prevent snagging delicate fabrics. Surfaces must resist corrosion from damp clothes.

Fabrication Process

Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts bracket components, hinge plates, and mounting hardware from flat sheet stock. Tube processing equipment cuts and notches drying rods and frame tubes. CNC press brake machines form brackets and mounting plates. Component assembly uses MIG welding for steel and TIG welding for stainless steel and aluminum. Hinge mechanisms require precise fabrication for smooth operation. Surface treatments include powder coating for steel, electropolishing for stainless steel, and anodizing for aluminum.

Field Notes: Folding Drying Racks

A folding drying rack is a mechanism with a frame attached, and the mechanism is where the engineering effort goes. The folding joint has to lock under load, unlock with one hand, and tolerate being forced by somebody who is in a hurry – which means the locking feature is designed as a positive engagement rather than as friction. On the frame side, the load case that matters is wet laundry bunched at the far end, not a load spread evenly, because that is where the moment on the joint is greatest. Two material details also come up repeatedly: tube is bent over a mandrel so the section stays round and the wall keeps its thickness on the outside of the bend, and where aluminium and stainless meet in the same frame, the contact points are isolated, since two different metals in a damp environment form a corrosion cell and the aluminium gives way.

Conclusion

Drying rack fabrication requires structural engineering, hinge mechanism design, and understanding of laundry workflows. Fulei Metal’s capabilities make us a trusted partner for laundry drying products.
