Barn Door Types

Sliding doors are the most common type, providing wide openings without swing space, fabricated from galvanized steel sheet and tube with track hangers, guide rollers, and stop hardware. Hinged doors are used for smaller openings with heavy-duty hinges and latches. Dutch doors are divided horizontally, allowing the top half to open while the bottom remains closed for ventilation with animal containment. Roll-up doors use galvanized steel slats that roll into a header housing. Ventilation doors incorporate adjustable louvers for airflow control.

Material Selection

Hot-dip galvanized steel is the standard material with zinc coating providing decades of corrosion resistance. We use 1.5 to 2.5 mm steel sheet for panels and 1.5 to 3.0 mm steel tube for frames. For enhanced appearance, powder coating over galvanized steel is available in barn red, forest green, and white. Door hardware including hinges, latches, and track systems uses stainless steel for critical components.

Design Considerations

Fabrication Process

Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts door panel components, reinforcement plates, and hardware mounting brackets. Steel tubes are cut to length and notched for frame assembly. CNC press brake machines form door panel skins, reinforcement channels, and weather seal retainers. Door assembly uses MIG welding with all welds ground smooth on visible and animal-contact surfaces. Door assemblies are hot-dip galvanized after fabrication, with powder-coated finishes available.

Our assembly team installs hinges, tracks, rollers, latches, handles, weather seals, and ventilation hardware. Each door undergoes functional testing including operation verification, hardware alignment, and seal effectiveness.

Case Study: Dairy Barn Door System

A European dairy farm required sliding door systems for a new 200-cow free-stall barn including 12 large sliding doors (4.0 by 3.5 meters) and 8 personnel doors. We fabricated door panels from 2.0 mm galvanized steel sheet with 2.5 mm tube frames, heavy-duty track systems, stainless steel hardware, and brush weather seals, powder-coated in forest green.
