How This Metal Trash Can Is Fabricated and Checked

A cylindrical steel bin is a rolling and welding job rather than a folding job. The whole product depends on one thing: whether the body stays round. If it does not, the lid will not close evenly and the base will not sit flat, and no amount of adjustment afterwards will put that right.

This page sets out how the body is made and checked at Fulei Metal, and where the material choice of 430 stainless is and is not the right answer.

The longitudinal seam is welded in a fixture, the same approach used for every cylindrical and frame assembly in our welding shop.
StageWhat happensWhat is verified before the job moves on
Blanking and cuttingThe body, base and lid are laser cut from 0.8 mm stainless. Drainage and vent holes are cut in the same operation. The developed length of the body is checked – it sets the finished diameter once rolled. This is the single dimension that everything else follows from.
RollingThe body is rolled to a cylinder on a three-roll machine.Roundness is checked at both ends and at the middle. A body rolled out of round will not accept the base or the lid squarely, and it will rock.
Longitudinal seam weldingThe seam is welded with the body held in a fixture so the diameter cannot open or close while it is being joined. The seam is checked for straightness and for a consistent bead. This is the step that fixes roundness permanently – a body that is not round when the seam is welded cannot be corrected afterwards.
Base and lid fittingThe base is welded or rolled and crimped into the body. The lid ring is fitted and checked against the lid.The base is checked for flatness and the lid for a consistent gap all the way round. A lid that closes evenly is the check most customers make first.
Soft-close mechanismThe soft-close unit is fitted into the lid assembly. It is a purchased component, matched to the weight of the lid and the geometry of the hinge point. The closure is cycled by hand and the closing speed checked. The mechanism is only as good as the hinge geometry around it, which is why the hinge point is a controlled dimension.
Deburr, clean and finishEdges are dulled, the part is cleaned and the visible surfaces are brushed. The top edge of the body and the lid edge are checked by hand. These are the two edges that are touched every time the bin is emptied.
Final check and packingInner liner, if specified, is fitted and the unit is packed with the lid supported. The unit is checked for rocking on a flat surface and for the lid sitting flush. Packing keeps the lid from loading the hinge in transit.
Welded assemblies staged on the shop floor at Fulei Metal. A cylindrical bin body follows the same rule as any welded frame here: the longitudinal seam is welded in a fixture, because a body that is not round when the seam closes will never sit flat on a base.

Revisions That Skip New Tooling on Metal Trash

The body is rolled and the parts are cut, so diameter, height and capacity are open. The items that involve purchased components are the ones to settle early.

Short Answers on Metal Trash

Why is the can specified in 430 stainless rather than 304?

430 is a ferritic stainless steel. It is magnetic, it costs less than 304, and it resists staining well enough for an indoor bin in a kitchen, bathroom or office. It is not as corrosion resistant as 304, so for a wet or heavily chlorinated environment the step up to 304 is worth taking. If a customer asks for a magnetic bin front for a label, 430 has that property and 304 does not – that is sometimes the deciding factor, and it is worth saying at quotation.

How is the body kept round?

Roundness is set at two points and then protected. It is set by the developed length cut into the blank and by the rolling setup, and it is protected by welding the seam in a fixture so the body cannot spring open or pinch closed while it is joined. What we do not do is roll a body, weld it freehand and then try to true it up – on 0.8 mm material that just moves the distortion around the circumference.

Is the soft-close mechanism made in-house?

No. The soft-close unit is a purchased mechanism and is matched to the weight of the lid and to the hinge point on the body. That matters for two reasons when you are specifying a new size. First, the mechanism has a working range, so a much heavier lid needs a different unit and may change the price. Second, the hinge geometry is a controlled dimension on our side: if the hinge point is wrong, the best mechanism available will still let the lid drop. Tell us the lid material and the closure you want and both are confirmed at sample stage.

Send the capacity you need in litres, whether the lid should be flat, domed or swing, and whether an inner liner is part of the scope. Diameter and height are the two numbers that set everything else. Send your specification for a quotation.

Bins are packed with the lid supported so the hinge is not loaded in transit; more on that in our export packaging notes.

SUS 430 Is a Deliberate Choice, and It Comes With a Boundary

A 12 litre stainless bin in 430 rather than 304 is a cost decision that works, provided the bin is used indoors. 430 is a ferritic stainless: it is magnetic, it costs less, and it resists the kind of mild indoor corrosion a kitchen bin actually sees. What it does not do well is resist chloride. A 430 bin used outdoors, or in a coastal kitchen, or cleaned with a bleach-based product regularly, will pit, and pitting looks like a material defect when it is really a specification one.

  • Fingerprint-resistant finish is a coating or a surface treatment, and it is the reason this bin is specified that way. It is also the first thing to wear on the rim, where hands go.
  • 0.8 mm is workable on a bin body because the rolled top edge and the folded base stiffen it. The body is not carrying much; the rim is carrying the handling.
  • The lid is the part that gets touched and the part that gets slammed. It is where a bin looks worn first, and it is worth more attention than the body.

Where a Bin Actually Leaks and Smells

A metal bin with a lid has one job beyond holding the bag: keeping the smell in. That is a closure problem, not a steel problem. The lid has to sit on the rim evenly, which means the rim has to be level and the lid has to be stiff enough not to dish. A rolled rim helps both – it gives the lid a defined seat and it stiffens the top of the body at the same time, which is why a rolled top edge appears on almost every bin that works.

The second issue is the bottom. A bin body with a folded seam at the base will hold whatever leaks out of a bag, and that liquid sits in the fold. A sealed base, or a base with a drain path, is the difference between a bin that can be cleaned and one that gets replaced. Tell us whether this is a dry office bin or a kitchen bin that will see liquid, and the base detail and the grade both change. Lead time is quoted after drawing review and process confirmation.

Payment Terms

How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.

  • 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
  • 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
  • 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.

If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.

Questions buyers ask before sending drawings

The questions that come up most often before a project starts, answered the way we answer them by email.

What do you need from me to quote Metal Trash Can?

2D drawings as PDF, DWG or DXF, or 3D files as STEP, IGES or SolidWorks, together with material grade, sheet thickness, surface finish, quantity and destination country. If the drawing is not finished yet, send a photo, a sketch or the existing part instead — we review what can be measured from it and reply with the questions that still need answering.

How long does a quotation take?

Enquiries are answered within one business day. Simple laser-cut and bent parts are quoted within 24 hours. Welded frames, assembled units and multi-part structures are quoted after the drawing review and process confirmation, and the date is confirmed in our reply.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

Prototypes are made from a single piece and small batches of 10–50 pieces are routine. Prototype, first batch and repeat volume are quoted together so the numbers stay consistent as the project scales.

Can you work from a sample or a photo if I have no drawing?

Yes. Send the part itself, clear photographs with a rule or caliper in frame, or a dimensioned sketch. We measure what can be measured, list what is still undefined, and confirm it with you before production.

Need a Similar Part?

Most enquiries that start on a page like this are not an order for Metal Trash Can — they are a search for a factory that can make something like it. Send us your drawing, 3D model or sample and we will review the manufacturing process and the quotation requirements, then come back with a process plan, a price and a lead time.

We work from 2D drawings, STEP / DWG / DXF / PDF files, or a physical sample if that is all you have.
