How This Decorative Bookend Is Fabricated and Checked
This bookend has to work as an object as well as a stop, so the design is carried by the silhouette and the surface rather than by a specification. That makes the edge condition and the coating the two things that decide whether it sells.
| Stage | What happens | What is verified before the job moves on |
|---|---|---|
| Blanking | Blank laser cut to the developed silhouette from 3.0 mm sheet | The developed profile, including any internal cut-outs. A decorative shape has no dimension to hide behind |
| Forming | The blank bent to the finished angle | Bend position and base flatness. At 3.0 mm the material is stiff enough to hold a book, and also stiff enough to show a bend that is off position |
| Edge finishing | Cut edges dressed, particularly along the visible silhouette | Edge condition over the whole profile. On this part the edges are the product, so a burr or a grinding mark is a reject |
| Surface preparation and coating | Degrease, phosphate, then powder coat in matte or gloss | Film thickness and, on gloss, the absence of orange peel or dust. Gloss hides nothing |
| Base treatment | Base pad or felt applied to protect the shelf | Pad adhesion, and that the pad does not lift the part off the shelf |
| Sample approval | A sample agreed against the design reference | Silhouette, colour and finish on the actual part rather than on a swatch |
| Packing | Individually boxed where it is sold as a gift item | That the finish arrives unmarked. On a decorative part the packaging is part of the perceived value |

What Can Change on Decorative Bookend Metal Without New Tooling
Here the appearance is the specification, so the variables worth controlling are the silhouette, the surface and the packaging.
| What can be changed | What it affects | What it does not affect |
|---|---|---|
| Silhouette and size | The blank development and the fold position | The base pad |
| Sheet thickness | Stiffness, weight and how substantial it feels in the hand | The silhouette |
| Finish: matte or gloss, and colour | Appearance, and how readily marks show | Nothing structural |
| Base pad or felt | Shelf protection and grip | The silhouette |
| Packaging | Whether it ships as a bulk part or a retail item | The product itself |
| Engraving or a mark | Whether the design carries a logo or a name | The coating, where the mark is applied afterwards |
Short Answers on Decorative Bookend Metal
Why does a gloss finish cost more to get right?
Because gloss shows everything: orange peel, a dust particle, a sanding mark under the coating. Matte hides more of it. It is not a different coating, it is tighter control on the preparation and the booth, and it is worth knowing before the two are compared on price alone.
How thick should the sheet be?
It follows how the part feels rather than what it has to hold. At 3.0 mm a decorative bookend feels substantial in the hand; below about 2.0 mm it starts to feel like a folded bracket. On a gift item that difference matters more than the material cost.
Can the part be engraved?
Yes, and where the mark is applied after coating it reads as bare metal, which is usually the intent. Where it is applied before, it can be flooded with a contrasting colour. Both work; they simply look different, so it is worth deciding which the design wants.
On a decorative part the decisions are the silhouette, the surface and the box, and all three are worth settling before the first cuts. Send the design reference and the finish through the RFQ form and a sample is made against it. Related: surface finishing, CNC bending and export packaging.
3 mm Plate: When a Bookend Becomes an Object
A decorative bookend in 3.0 mm plate is a different product from a 1.5 mm one. At that thickness the part has real mass – around 1.2 kg – and it can hold a row of heavy books on weight alone. It also stops behaving like folded sheet and starts behaving like plate: the edges become a visible design surface, laser-cut detail becomes practical, and the bend radius has to be larger relative to thickness. That is what makes the geometric and custom patterns on this part possible – a cut outline in 3 mm holds a crisp edge that 1 mm cannot.
- Laser-cut patterns in 3 mm give a clean edge with a slight taper; if the design has fine detail, we check the minimum feature size before quoting rather than discovering it on the machine.
- Matte and glossy powder finishes read very differently on a part this solid – gloss shows every fingerprint and every handling mark, matte hides both.
- At 180 x 180 x 220 mm the part is compact and heavy, which makes packing and shipping cost a real part of the landed price.
Design Files: What We Need to Quote a Custom Shape
For a custom shape we need a vector outline rather than a picture of one. A DXF or DWG with the outline on a single layer, plus the material, the finish and the quantity, is enough to quote and to cut. If you have a rendered image but no vector, we can usually work from a dimensioned sketch for a simple geometry – but complex outlines need the file, because tracing introduces interpretation and interpretation introduces error.
Bend position matters as much as outline. A design that puts a bend too close to a cut feature will distort, and a design with no bend allowance will come out the wrong size. We check the flat pattern before cutting and come back with anything that looks wrong, because it is far cheaper to fix a file than a batch of finished parts. Lead time is quoted after drawing review and process confirmation.
Payment Terms
How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.
- 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
- 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
- 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.
If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.
Questions buyers ask before sending drawings
The questions that come up most often before a project starts, answered the way we answer them by email.
What do you need from me to quote Decorative Bookend?
2D drawings as PDF, DWG or DXF, or 3D files as STEP, IGES or SolidWorks, together with material grade, sheet thickness, surface finish, quantity and destination country. If the drawing is not finished yet, send a photo, a sketch or the existing part instead — we review what can be measured from it and reply with the questions that still need answering.
How long does a quotation take?
Enquiries are answered within one business day. Simple laser-cut and bent parts are quoted within 24 hours. Welded frames, assembled units and multi-part structures are quoted after the drawing review and process confirmation, and the date is confirmed in our reply.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
Prototypes are made from a single piece and small batches of 10–50 pieces are routine. Prototype, first batch and repeat volume are quoted together so the numbers stay consistent as the project scales.
Can you work from a sample or a photo if I have no drawing?
Yes. Send the part itself, clear photographs with a rule or caliper in frame, or a dimensioned sketch. We measure what can be measured, list what is still undefined, and confirm it with you before production.
Need a Similar Part?
Most enquiries that start on a page like this are not an order for Decorative Bookend — they are a search for a factory that can make something like it. Send us your drawing, 3D model or sample and we will review the manufacturing process and the quotation requirements, then come back with a process plan, a price and a lead time.
We work from 2D drawings, STEP / DWG / DXF / PDF files, or a physical sample if that is all you have.
No complete drawings yet? Describe the part, send photos or a sketch, or send a sample — we can start from there. Discuss your project.

Quotation Time
We quote from your drawings. How long that takes depends on what the part asks for:
- Simple parts — quoted within 24 hours. Laser-cut blanks and bent components, supplied with complete 2D or 3D drawings. Mon–Fri, GMT+8.
- Complex assemblies — quoted after the drawing review. Payment kiosks, multi-part welded frames, enclosures with purchased hardware, or anything needing a coating or assembly trial. We confirm a quotation date once the scope is clear.
Production lead time is quoted separately, after drawing review and process confirmation. Send your drawings.
