How This Pump Base Frame Is Fabricated and Checked
A pump base frame is a structural part with a flatness requirement. The pump and the motor are aligned on it, and a frame that twists under load puts that alignment out.
| Stage | What happens | What is verified before the job moves on |
|---|---|---|
| Section cutting and forming | Base frame sections cut and mitred; mounting pads and gussets formed | Section straightness and mitre angles, which decide whether the frame welds up flat |
| Frame welding in a fixture | Frame welded in a fixture with the mounting pad positions held, not welded free on the floor | Diagonals, overall flatness and pad positions. A frame welded free pulls as it cools |
| Drilling and pad preparation | Mounting holes and any dowel positions made; pads faced where alignment depends on them | Hole positions relative to the pads, and pad flatness, since the alignment shims work off these faces |
| Flatness check | Frame checked on a surface plate or with a straight edge and feeler gauges | Flatness across the mounting pads, recorded as values rather than as a pass mark |
| Surface preparation and coating | Degrease, phosphate and powder coat, or a specified primer system | Film thickness including inside the frame, which is where corrosion starts on a pump base |
| Post-coating alignment check | Pump and motor positions checked with the frame as finished | That coating and handling have not moved flatness beyond the stated limit |
| Packing | Base protected, alignment faces protected from coating or transit damage | The packed unit, and the condition of the alignment faces on arrival |

Revisions That Skip New Tooling on Pump Base Frame Sheet Metal
The pump and motor interface is fixed by the equipment; everything around it can move.
| What can be changed | What it affects | What it does not affect |
|---|---|---|
| Frame length, width and height | Section size, pad positions and the packing | The weld procedure and the flatness requirement |
| Pump and motor footprint | Pad positions and the hole pattern | The frame section, provided the span stays reasonable |
| Material: mild steel, stainless or a coated system | Corrosion behaviour and the finish cost | The flatness method |
| Drip tray or containment | The frame footprint and how the tray is formed | The mounting pads |
| Lifting points or eye bolts | Where the load is taken during installation | The base structure |
| Finish system | Coating or paint specification, inside and out | Nothing structural |
Short Answers on Pump Base Frame Sheet Metal
What flatness can be held on a welded frame?
It depends on the frame size and the section, and it is agreed as a value rather than as the word flat. The requirement has to be set before welding, because flatness is a property of the fixture and the weld sequence; correcting it afterwards means machining, which costs more than doing it properly.
Why weld in a fixture rather than on the floor?
A frame welded free distorts as it cools and as the welds pull. In a fixture the geometry is held while that happens, so flatness comes from the process rather than from luck, and it repeats across the batch.
Can the frame be supplied with the pump mounted?
Only where alignment and packing are part of the scope, and that changes the transport case. If you want it, give us the pump and motor models at enquiry stage so the flatness and the shim allowance are set for that specific assembly.
Flatness and the alignment faces are the whole point of the part, so they are set before welding and verified after coating. Send the pump and motor footprint through the RFQ form with the drawing, and the frame is sized to that interface. Related: welding, measurement tools and custom sheet metal fabrication.
Welding Sequence on a 5-10 mm Pump Base
A pump base frame is thick plate, and thick plate moves when you weld it. Two long seams run down one side without a balanced sequence and the frame cups; the machined faces then sit out of plane and the pump has to be shimmed to align with the motor. Shimming a pump is a field cost that comes straight out of a fabrication decision, so we plan the sequence – balanced runs, alternating sides, restraint where it helps – before striking an arc, and we check the mounting face after welding rather than assuming it.
- Bolt holes are pre-drilled to the pump model. That means the drawing has to name the pump, or give the hole pattern; “custom per pump model” without the pattern is not a quotable part.
- Load capacity up to 2000 kg is a statement about the section and the weld size together. If your pump and motor combination is heavier, or the base sits on an uneven floor, that changes the section.
- Sandblasting plus epoxy primer is the standard route because these frames are usually grouted in or bolted down and then hidden. Powder coating is available where the frame stays visible.
Alignment, Grouting and the Surface You Cannot See
The underside of a base frame is the surface nobody specifies and everyone regrets. It is the face that meets grout or a concrete plinth, and if it is bare steel under a primer that gets scratched during installation, it will start rusting where it cannot be seen or maintained. We discuss the underside treatment at quote stage – a heavier primer build, or a coating specification matched to how the frame is installed.
Send the pump and motor arrangement, the load, the hole pattern and the installation method with the drawing. If you have a layout drawing from the pump supplier, that is better than a dimensioned sketch, because the bolt positions and the coupling offset come straight off it. We quote a lead time after drawing review and process confirmation.
Payment Terms
How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.
- 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
- 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
- 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.
If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.
Questions buyers ask before sending drawings
The questions that come up most often before a project starts, answered the way we answer them by email.
What do you need from me to quote Pump Base Frame?
2D drawings as PDF, DWG or DXF, or 3D files as STEP, IGES or SolidWorks, together with material grade, sheet thickness, surface finish, quantity and destination country. If the drawing is not finished yet, send a photo, a sketch or the existing part instead — we review what can be measured from it and reply with the questions that still need answering.
How long does a quotation take?
Enquiries are answered within one business day. Simple laser-cut and bent parts are quoted within 24 hours. Welded frames, assembled units and multi-part structures are quoted after the drawing review and process confirmation, and the date is confirmed in our reply.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
Prototypes are made from a single piece and small batches of 10–50 pieces are routine. Prototype, first batch and repeat volume are quoted together so the numbers stay consistent as the project scales.
Can you work from a sample or a photo if I have no drawing?
Yes. Send the part itself, clear photographs with a rule or caliper in frame, or a dimensioned sketch. We measure what can be measured, list what is still undefined, and confirm it with you before production.
Need a Similar Part?
Most enquiries that start on a page like this are not an order for Pump Base Frame — they are a search for a factory that can make something like it. Send us your drawing, 3D model or sample and we will review the manufacturing process and the quotation requirements, then come back with a process plan, a price and a lead time.
We work from 2D drawings, STEP / DWG / DXF / PDF files, or a physical sample if that is all you have.
No complete drawings yet? Describe the part, send photos or a sketch, or send a sample — we can start from there. Discuss your project.
