Introduction

Pump supports provide stable mounting for industrial pumps, transferring loads to foundations while maintaining alignment between pumps and motors. These supports must withstand pump vibration, fluid forces, and thermal expansion while providing precise alignment. Pump Support Types

Baseplate supports provide common mounting for pump and motor on a single base. Skid supports provide complete pump package mounting including motor, coupling, and guard. Wall-mount supports attach pumps to wall structures. Floor-mount supports anchor pumps to floor surfaces. Sump supports suspend pumps above sumps or tanks. Vertical pump supports support vertical turbine pumps.

Material Selection

Hot-dip galvanized steel provides cost-effective supports with good corrosion resistance for general industrial applications. We use 3.0 to 6.0 mm steel sheet and tube. For corrosive environments, stainless steel (grade 304 or 316L) provides superior corrosion resistance. For food processing and pharmaceutical applications, stainless steel is mandatory for hygiene. Powder coating provides additional corrosion protection and appearance.

Design Considerations

Supports must maintain pump-motor alignment under load and vibration. Baseplate flatness is critical for alignment, requiring precision fabrication. Supports must resist vibration-induced fatigue. Mounting holes must match standard pump and motor frame dimensions. Grouting surfaces must be flat for proper baseplate installation. All edges must be smooth for safety. Supports must accommodate thermal expansion of connected piping. Drainage must prevent fluid accumulation on support surfaces.

Fabrication Process

Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts baseplate blanks, support brackets, and reinforcement gussets from flat sheet stock with precise mounting hole patterns. CNC press brake machines form baseplate edges, support profiles, and reinforcement bends. Tube processing equipment cuts and notches support tubes. Component assembly uses MIG welding for steel and TIG welding for stainless steel, with welds ground flat on mounting surfaces. Surface treatments include hot-dip galvanizing, powder coating, and electropolishing.

Field Notes: Pump and Equipment Support Frames

A pump support frame is a structure that has to be stiff, not strong. Static strength is rarely the issue on a pump skid – the loads are modest – but vibration is what damages pumps, and a frame that flexes at or near a running frequency will amplify it. That makes the frame design a question of stiffness and of where the mass sits, rather than of choosing a heavier section. Two fabrication details follow. Base flatness matters, because a frame that is twisted when it is bolted down puts the pump out of alignment and that load does not disappear; it goes into the coupling. And the mounting pads have to be machined or at least checked flat after welding, because welding a pad onto a frame distorts it, and a pump sitting on four pads that are not coplanar is a pump that runs out of alignment.
