Door Handle Types

Field Notes: Door Handles and Architectural Hardware
A stainless door handle is a bent tube, and the whole technical difficulty is in the bend. Bending tube without deforming it requires a mandrel inside the tube to support the section, because an unsupported bend flattens the profile and, worse, thins the wall on the outside of the radius – exactly where a pulled handle concentrates stress. The bend radius also has to be reasonable in relation to the tube diameter; a very tight radius on a 25 mm tube cannot be produced on any equipment without accepting some distortion, and it is better to say so than to quote for it. The finish then decides how the product is judged in use: a brushed finish hides fingerprints and light scratches and can be blended locally, while a mirror polish looks better in a photograph and shows every mark it receives.
