Horse fencing requires a different approach from other livestock fencing. Horses are flight animals that may run into fences when startled, and their instincts to lean, rub, and test boundaries create unique challenges. Equestrian fencing must be highly visible, smooth-surfaced, and strong enough to contain horses without causing injury. Equestrian Fencing Design Principles

Horses must be able to see fencing clearly to avoid running into it, especially in low light. We design panels with solid top rails or visible rail profiles, with powder coating in visible colors such as white, brown, or green. Equestrian fencing should be 1.4 to 1.6 meters high to prevent jumping, with rail spacing preventing horses from getting heads or hooves stuck (typically 300-450 mm). Horse fencing must have no sharp edges, protruding fasteners, or rough welds. We grind all welds smooth, countersink fasteners, and round all edges.

Fencing Types

Riding arenas require fencing that defines the riding area while withstanding occasional contact, with smooth top rails and kick-proof lower sections. Paddock fencing encloses smaller turnout areas with 2.0 mm galvanized steel tube and pin or hook connectors. Interior horse stall partitions must be strong enough to contain horses while allowing ventilation, with solid lower sections and barred upper sections. Round pens for horse training require heavy-duty construction with smooth surfaces and connections forming a continuous circle.

Material Selection

Galvanized steel is the standard material with zinc coating providing corrosion resistance in outdoor environments. For enhanced appearance, powder coating over galvanized steel is popular, with white being a popular color for high visibility. Aluminum equestrian fencing offers natural corrosion resistance and light weight for premium facilities, fabricated from 6061 alloy.

Fabrication Process

Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts connector plates, mounting brackets, and decorative components. Steel and aluminum tubes are cut to length and notched for tube-to-tube joints. Curved fence panels and round pen components are formed using CNC tube bending equipment. Panel assembly uses MIG welding for steel and TIG welding for aluminum, with all welds ground smooth for horse safety. Galvanized panels are hot-dip galvanized after fabrication, with powder-coated panels finished in client-specified colors.

Case Study: Equestrian Fencing for a US Livestock Programme

Alongside cattle and pig equipment, Fulei Metal has produced equestrian fencing for a major US livestock producer, part of a supply relationship that began in 2016. Horse fencing is not cattle fencing with a different label. The clear opening between rails has to be small enough that a hoof cannot pass through it, and every cut end and rail end has to be closed or capped, because a horse that catches itself on an open tube end does serious damage. Panels in these programmes are hot-dip galvanized after welding, and the gate hardware is checked for alignment on the assembled panel rather than on the loose parts – a hinge that is one degree off vertical will let the gate swing downhill on its own.
