Introduction
Industrial sensors monitor temperature, pressure, position, flow, and countless other parameters that keep manufacturing processes running safely and efficiently. These sensors contain delicate electronics that must be protected from harsh industrial environments while maintaining sensing accuracy. At Fulei Metal, we fabricate sensor enclosures for clients in automation, process control, and industrial IoT applications.
Sensor Enclosure Requirements
Industrial sensors may be exposed to dust, moisture, chemicals, extreme temperatures, and physical impact. Many sensors are sensitive to electromagnetic interference, requiring enclosures with conductive materials, continuous welded seams, and filtered cable entries. Sensor electronics generate heat that must be dissipated while maintaining environmental protection. Sensors must be mounted in precise positions, requiring mounting brackets and adjustment features.
Enclosure Types
Wall-mount enclosures are the most common type, with hinged or screw-on covers, cable entry glands, and internal mounting features. Probe and immersion enclosures protect sensing elements while allowing contact with process media, fabricated from stainless steel with welded construction. Field-mount enclosures are designed for outdoor locations with UV-resistant finishes and sun shields. DIN rail mount enclosures are compact units for control panel installation.
Material Selection
Stainless steel is the preferred material for sensor enclosures in industrial environments (grade 304 or 316L). Aluminum sensor enclosures offer light weight and good thermal conductivity for portable sensors and thermal management. Cold-rolled steel provides a cost-effective option for indoor applications in non-corrosive environments, with EMI shielding properties.
Fabrication Process
Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts enclosure bodies, covers, and mounting brackets with precise cutouts for cable entries, sensor windows, and mounting features. CNC press brake machines form enclosure bodies and covers with precise bending for cover fit and gasket compression. Sealed enclosures require continuous TIG welding with pinhole-free seams. Stainless steel enclosures may be electropolished, aluminum enclosures are anodized, and steel enclosures are powder-coated.
Case Study: Sensor Enclosures for a Norwegian Industrial Customer
Sensor enclosures were fabricated at Fulei Metal during 2025 for a Norwegian equipment manufacturer, in a production programme of roughly 1,000 pieces. A sensor enclosure has to do something a general enclosure does not: it has to let the sensor see out, or let a cable reach it, without compromising the seal. Every aperture that carries a cable or a window is a break in the one continuous surface that makes the enclosure work, so the aperture detail as a whole is what decides whether the housing performs. In practice that means the aperture is dimensioned around the specific cable gland or window being used, confirmed with the customer before cutting, and the sealing face around each aperture is left flat enough to seat a gasket rather than simply punched out. Cable entries are positioned so the cable enters without a tight bend immediately outside the gland, because that bend is where moisture tracks in.
Conclusion
Industrial sensor enclosure fabrication requires precision manufacturing, understanding of sensor performance requirements, and expertise in environmental protection. Fulei Metal’s comprehensive capabilities make us a trusted partner for sensor enclosure projects.
