Introduction

Server cabinets are the physical foundation of every data center. They house rack-mounted servers, networking equipment, and power distribution units while providing thermal management, cable routing, and physical security. The tolerances for server cabinet fabrication are tight, as equipment from different manufacturers must fit interchangeably. Server Cabinet Standards

The EIA-310 standard defines dimensional requirements for 19-inch rack-mount equipment. Server cabinets must maintain precise internal widths, mounting hole spacing, and vertical rail positions. Rack units (U) are the standard height measurement, with 1U equaling 44.45 mm. Cabinet vertical rails must maintain accurate U-spacing over their entire height, which can be 42U or more. Any deviation can prevent equipment from mounting properly.

Structural Design

Server cabinet frames typically use welded tubular or angle frame construction from 2.0 to 3.0 mm cold-rolled steel. A fully loaded 42U server cabinet can weigh over 500 kg, so frames must support this load without deflection. Side panels, doors, and top and bottom panels attach with quick-release fasteners. Door designs include perforated front and rear doors for airflow and tempered glass doors for visibility.

Thermal Management

Front and rear doors with perforation patterns of 64 percent or more open area allow maximum airflow. We use laser cutting to produce precise perforation patterns that maintain structural integrity while maximizing ventilation. For high-density installations, cabinets may integrate active cooling systems, and we fabricate mounting features for fan trays, heat exchangers, and liquid cooling distribution units.

Cable Management

Server cabinets require comprehensive cable management to organize power, data, and fiber cables. We fabricate vertical cable management channels, horizontal cable managers, and cable management arms. Top and bottom cable entry points are sized for fully populated cabinets, with brush-lined cable entry panels that allow cables to pass through while blocking airflow.

Fabrication Process

Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts all cabinet panels, frames, and mounting rails with precision. Cabinet panels and structural components are formed on our four CNC press brake machines. Cabinet frames are TIG or MIG welded at our ten welding stations. Server cabinets are typically powder-coated in black (RAL 9005) with a textured finish.

Case Study: Cabinet Fabrication for a Norwegian Industrial Project

Cabinet and rack structures were produced at Fulei Metal during 2025 for a Norwegian industrial customer, in a programme of roughly 1,000 pieces that also included stainless mounting components. Rack and cabinet structures fail on flatness rather than on strength. A cabinet that is square on the bench but slightly twisted after welding will still bolt to a floor or a wall, but the door will then line up at three corners and stand off at the fourth, and no adjustment of the hinge will fix it. That is why the frame is checked for twist as well as for square, and why the door is fitted and checked before finishing rather than after – a door that has been adjusted to fit a twisted opening is a door that will need adjusting again in service.
