What Drawings Are Needed for a Sheet Metal

Most delays on a custom sheet metal quotation come from a drawing that is 90 per cent complete. The missing 10 per cent — a material grade, a tolerance on one dimension, a finish note — is what turns a price into a list of questions. This page lists what to send so the first reply is a quotation rather than an enquiry.

The Drawing Is the Input, the Route Is the Output

A sheet metal supplier prices a process route, not a shape. The drawing has to describe what the part has to be in service, and the supplier decides how to get there. That is why the information below is asked for together rather than one item at a time.

Drawing Package Checklist

2D drawing with revisionDimensions, tolerances, notes and the revision level. The revision is what a quotation and an inspection report both refer to.
3D model where it existsSTEP, IGES or SolidWorks. The model is what allows bend clearance, hardware access and assembly interference to be checked before quotation.
Material and thicknessGrade and thickness per part. Where a substitution is acceptable, say so; where it is not, say that too.
Finish and maskingCoating reference, cosmetic surfaces and the areas that must stay bare or have threads free of coating.
Critical dimensionsThe characteristics that affect fit or function, so the inspection plan can be built around them instead of around every dimension.
Quantity and repeat demandPrototype, first batch and annual volume, plus whether the part is a repeat of an existing item.
Assembly and hardwareHardware references, gaskets, hinges, labels and any parts you supply.
Packing and destinationHow the parts have to arrive, and where they are going. This decides the export packing specification.

What a Missing Item Costs

A missing material grade produces a quotation that has to be reissued. A missing tolerance produces a part that is inspected against an assumption. A missing finish note produces a part that fits before coating and binds after it. None of these is a manufacturing problem; all three are input problems, and all three are cheap to avoid.

Where something genuinely is not decided yet, write it as open and state your working assumption. A quotation flagged with its assumptions can be compared with another quotation; a quotation without them cannot.

What Comes Back

The reply is a technical answer plus a price. Where the drawing raises a manufacturing question, the question comes first, because a price quoted against a drawing that cannot be made as drawn is not usable. The quotation itself states the process route, material, finish, lead time, trade term and packing, so it can be compared on the same basis as any other — see drawing review and the RFQ checklist for what that review covers.

Drawings can be sent to violet@fuleimetal.com or through the contact page. Files are treated as confidential and used only for the project they were sent for.

What Slows a Quotation Down

Four things account for most of the delay. A drawing without a revision, so nobody is sure which version is being quoted. A material callout that names a grade but not a thickness. A finish described only as a colour photograph. And a quantity given as a single number, when the useful answer needs the prototype, first batch and annual volume together.

None of these requires a new drawing. A short covering note — revision, material, thickness, finish reference, quantity, destination — is usually enough to turn an enquiry into a quotation, and it takes less time than answering the questions that follow without it.

What Buyers Usually Ask About Drawings Sheet Metal Fabrication

What formats do you accept?

PDF, DWG and DXF for 2D drawings, and STEP, IGES or SolidWorks for models. Where only a photograph and rough dimensions exist, that is enough to start a technical discussion, but a firm quotation needs a drawing.

Can you quote from a sample instead of a drawing?

Yes. Send the sample, or photographs with overall dimensions and detail shots, and we will measure it and produce a drawing for your approval before production.

What if we only have a sketch?

Send it. For simple brackets a marked-up sketch is often enough to quote. For assemblies, a model or a dimensioned drawing is needed before production, because clearances cannot be verified from a sketch.

The Three Notes That Stall a Quotation Most Often

Across the enquiries we receive, delays cluster around the same three omissions, and none of them are exotic. The first is material specified by a common name rather than by a grade or standard – “stainless”, “galvanized steel”, “cold-rolled” all describe families rather than a material, and the price and the forming behaviour differ within each family. The second is finish specified as a colour with no pre-treatment or environment: the colour is the easy half of a coating specification, and the pre-treatment is what decides how it ages. The third is tolerance applied to every dimension instead of to the ones that matter, which turns a routable part into an inspection job.

  • Material: name the grade, or the standard it has to meet. If you are matching an existing part, a sample or a photo of the marking helps.
  • Finish: state the environment – indoor, outdoor, coastal, wash-down – not just the RAL number.
  • Tolerance: mark the features that mate with something else and leave the rest general.

What Comes Back After a DFM Review

A drawing review is not a formality and it is not a delay tactic. When a fabrication drawing comes in, the review looks for the things that will cost money or cause a problem later: a hole too close to a bend, a flange too short to form, a tolerance that cannot be held from the stated datum, a finish that will not survive the stated environment. Each of those is cheap to change on a drawing and expensive to change on a finished part, so the review happens before cutting rather than after.

What comes back is the drawing with the proposed changes marked, the reasoning for each, and a quotation against the revised version – not a quotation against the original with the problems noted afterwards. If a change affects something you cannot accept for assembly reasons, that is the moment to say so: the alternative is usually a different form rather than a concession on cost. Lead time is quoted after drawing review and process confirmation.
