What a Progressive Die Needs Before It Runs

A progressive die pays back when the part is stable and the volume justifies the tooling. Before quoting we look at whether the geometry can be produced in a strip at all: the part has to stay attached to a carrier through every station, which limits how much forming can happen at the ends and edges.

The decisions that matter are made on the drawing — hole-to-edge distance, bend direction relative to the strip, burr direction, and whether tapping or riveting can be brought into the die or stays a secondary operation. Changing any of these after the die is built means reworking tooling, not re-programming a machine.

Where a part is still changing, we usually suggest laser cutting or a single-station tool first, then moving to a progressive die once the geometry settles. That sequence is cheaper than modifying a die.

Tooling, Strip Layout and First-Off Approval

Tooling starts with the strip layout: station count, pierce and form order, and the carrier design that holds the part until the final cut-off. Tool steel and station count follow the material, thickness and expected volume.

Tooling samples are produced and measured before a run is approved. The dimensions the die controls directly — hole positions, formed heights, cut-off length — are checked on first-off parts, and the strip is reviewed for burr height and for marking on visible faces.

Once approved, the die runs with checks through the batch. Tapping and riveting are done in-die or as secondary operations depending on the part; which one applies is stated in the quotation, so there is no ambiguity about what the die produces.

What We Check on Stamped Parts

First-article inspection covers the dimensions the tooling controls, checked against the drawing before the batch runs.

In-process checks follow the die through production, because tool wear and strip variation show up gradually rather than suddenly. Burr height and direction are checked too, since they affect assembly and any coating that follows. Threaded and riveted features are verified with the appropriate gauging.

For projects requiring documentation, incoming material checks, in-process dimensional checks and final inspection photos or reports can be provided. Send any specified tolerance or inspection requirement with the drawing so it is quoted rather than assumed.

Parts Typically Produced on Progressive Dies

  • Brackets, clips and mounting plates at volume
  • Terminals and contact parts in copper
  • Small panels and covers with pierced holes
  • Formed sheet metal parts that repeat across a product range
  • Parts where tapping or riveting can be combined into the die

What Speeds Up a Stamping Quote

  • 2D drawing with tolerances, and 3D model if available
  • Material, temper and thickness range
  • Annual volume and expected batch size
  • Whether the geometry is final or still under design change
  • Secondary operations required: tapping, riveting, plating or coating

Progressive Die Stamping Questions

What quantity justifies a progressive die?

Tooling cost has to be recovered over volume, so dies suit repeat runs rather than one-off work. Send your annual volume and we will say whether a die or laser cutting is the better route.

How long does tooling take?

It depends on station count and how much forming is involved. The tooling sample time shown above is the reference for this part plan.

Can the die include tapping or riveting?

Often yes, but it depends on the feature and the strip layout. It is confirmed during tooling design.

Can you work from a die we already own?

Send the die drawing or the part drawing and we will assess the tooling condition before quoting.

Trade Terms and Delivery

We quote under the standard Incoterms your logistics team already works with, and build the packing and documentation around the one you choose.

  • EXW — you collect from our Ningbo facility and run export clearance through your own forwarder.
  • FOB Ningbo — we deliver to the vessel at Ningbo port and handle export clearance.
  • CIF — we cover carriage and insurance to your named destination port.
  • DDP — we handle carriage, insurance, import clearance and duties through to your door.

Send your destination country, target delivery date and preferred trade term together with the drawing. Request a quotation.

Payment Terms

How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.

  • 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
  • 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
  • 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.

If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.

Quotation Time

We quote from your drawings. How long that takes depends on what the part asks for:

  • Simple parts — quoted within 24 hours. Laser-cut blanks and bent components, supplied with complete 2D or 3D drawings. Mon–Fri, GMT+8.
  • Complex assemblies — quoted after the drawing review. Payment kiosks, multi-part welded frames, enclosures with purchased hardware, or anything needing a coating or assembly trial. We confirm a quotation date once the scope is clear.

Production lead time is quoted separately, after drawing review and process confirmation. Send your drawings.
