Discover how transit platform facilities are fabricated including shelters, seating, and safety barriers. Learn about material selection, weather resistance, and real-world installations.
Introduction
Transit platforms require facilities that protect passengers from weather, provide seating and information, and ensure safety around moving trains and buses. These facilities must withstand outdoor exposure, high passenger traffic, and potential vandalism. At Fulei Metal, we fabricate platform facility components for transit authorities across Europe and Southeast Asia.
Platform Facility Types
Platform shelters protect waiting passengers from rain, wind, and sun. Platform seating provides resting space for waiting passengers. Platform safety barriers prevent passenger access to track areas. Information display housings protect real-time arrival and information displays. Platform edging provides tactile warning and visual contrast at platform edges. Waste receptacles provide trash collection on platforms.
Material Selection
Stainless steel (grade 304 or 316L) provides premium platform facilities with decades of corrosion resistance and vandal resistance. We use 2.0 to 4.0 mm sheet and tube. Powder-coated galvanized steel provides cost-effective facilities with good durability and color options. Tempered glass panels provide wind protection with visibility. All materials must withstand outdoor exposure, frequent cleaning, and potential vandalism. For underground stations, materials must meet fire safety standards for underground transit.
Design Considerations
Platform facilities must withstand high passenger traffic and potential vandalism. Shelters must provide weather protection while maintaining visibility for safety and platform surveillance. Seating must be durable, drain rainwater, and resist vandalism. Safety barriers must prevent passenger track access while allowing emergency evacuation. Information displays must be readable in various lighting conditions. All edges must be smooth for passenger safety. Facilities must meet accessibility standards for wheelchair users. Aesthetic design should complement transit station architecture.
Fabrication Process
Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts shelter frame components, seating supports, and barrier panels from flat sheet stock. CNC press brake machines form shelter panels, seating profiles, and barrier components. Tube processing equipment cuts and notches frame tubes. Component assembly uses TIG welding for stainless steel and MIG welding for galvanized steel. Surface treatments include electropolishing, powder coating, and anti-graffiti coatings.
Case Study: Metro Platform Upgrade
A Southeast Asian transit authority required 100 platform facility sets for a metro line upgrade including shelters, seating, safety barriers, and information display housings. We fabricated all facilities from 2.5 mm 316L stainless steel with electropolished finish, tempered glass panels, vandal-resistant seating, and integrated cable management for displays. The platform upgrade improved passenger comfort and safety significantly, and the authority has ordered facilities for additional stations.
Conclusion
Platform facility fabrication requires weather protection, vandal resistance, and transit safety compliance. Fulei Metal’s capabilities make us a trusted partner for transit infrastructure projects.
