Powder-Coated Steel Library Bookshelf

Description

Our library bookshelf is engineered for the heavy loads and constant use of public and academic libraries. The uprights are fabricated from 1.2mm high-strength steel with double-folded edges for rigidity. Shelves are 1.0mm steel with reinforcing ribs, supporting 80kg per shelf evenly distributed. The shelf height is adjustable in 25mm increments. An anti-tip wall-mounting bracket is integrated into the top of each upright. The entire unit is powder-coated in a scratch-resistant finish available in any RAL color.

Manufacturing Notes

Two decisions shape every library bookshelf we build: how the upright resists twisting, and how the shelf keeps its shape under a full row of hardbacks. Both are solved in the tooling and the forming sequence, not by adding weight.

  • Upright thickness: 1.2mm SPCC with a double-folded front edge. The folded flange roughly triples the section stiffness of a flat 1.2mm strip, which is why we do not go thinner — a plain 0.8mm upright twists visibly once three rows of books are loaded.
  • Shelf ribs: The reinforcing ribs are roll-formed into the shelf, not welded on. Roll-forming keeps the shelf flat and leaves no weld marks that would telegraph through the powder coat.
  • Notch pitch: The 25mm height-adjustment notches are punched on a common die so shelves stay interchangeable between batches and between units in the same order.
  • Welding and finishing: Corner joints are spot-welded and dressed before coating. Units are phosphated, then powder-coated at 60–80μm so shelf edges and notches do not flash rust in humid reading rooms.

Inspection & Quality Control

Every order ships with a dimensional report. The checks below are run on the first article and then repeated on a sampling basis through the run.

  • Incoming material: Mill certificate held on file for the SPCC coil; thickness verified with a micrometer at three points per sheet.
  • First article inspection (FAI): One complete unit assembled with no adjustment allowed. Height, width, depth, notch pitch and shelf-to-upright fit are recorded against the drawing.
  • Interchangeability check: Each shelf is fitted at three different heights on each upright to confirm the notches align across the batch.
  • Load test: One shelf per batch is loaded to 100kg evenly distributed and held 24 hours; deflection at the shelf centre is measured and must stay within 2mm.
  • Coating: Film thickness measured with an electronic gauge (60–80μm target) and adhesion checked by cross-hatch. Salt spray 240 hours on a sample panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you build a height that is not in the list?

Yes. Heights from 1200mm to 2400mm are built to order, and width and depth can be adjusted independently. Heights outside the standard list add roughly one week to the lead time because a new notch die position has to be set.

Is the load rating different for a 2200mm unit?

The 80kg per shelf figure is a per-shelf limit and does not change with unit height. What changes is stability: taller units must be wall-anchored, and the anti-tip bracket is supplied with every unit for that reason.

Can the shelves take archive boxes instead of books?

Yes, provided the load is spread over the shelf and not concentrated in one corner. For dense archive storage tell us the box size and total weight per shelf at enquiry stage and we will confirm the shelf thickness needed.

Do you supply the assembly hardware?

Yes. Knock-down units ship with the connecting bolts, wall anchors and an assembly sheet. Units can also ship fully assembled if you prefer, at higher freight volume.
