Making Small Quantities Economical to Produce

Small batches cost more per piece for a simple reason: the setup — programming, material handling, machine changeover, first-piece inspection — is much the same whether you order one part or several hundred. The way to control that cost is to design the part so it needs fewer setups.

In practice that means standard material thicknesses that are already in stock, one consistent bend radius so the same tooling runs across the whole part, and as few separate finishes as the application allows. A part with one bend radius and one coating runs faster than a part needing four tool changes and two finishes.

We quote small runs by looking at what actually drives the setup count, and we say what we found, so you can decide whether a small drawing change is worth making.

How a One-Piece Order Is Scheduled

Small orders go through the same route as larger ones — cutting, bending, welding if required, deburring and finishing — but they are scheduled to share machine time rather than wait for a dedicated run.

Prototype parts are usually produced without dedicated tooling, using laser cutting and CNC bending, which is why a design change at this stage costs little. Once the geometry is approved and volume grows, the same part can move to staged production or, at higher volumes, to tooling.

We keep the first-piece record and the approved parameters, so a repeat order months later runs the same way instead of being re-engineered from scratch.

What We Check on Small Batches

First-piece inspection matters more on a small run, because there is no long production run to settle the setup. Dimensions marked critical on the drawing are checked on the first part before the rest are made.

Fit is checked where parts assemble or mount to other components, since a prototype is often used to validate a design rather than simply to fill an order.

Incoming material checks, in-process dimensional checks and final inspection photos can be provided on request. If your project has specific inspection or documentation requirements, send them with the drawing so they are included in the quotation.

Orders That Suit Low-Volume Production

  • Design validation prototypes before tooling is committed
  • Spare and replacement parts for existing equipment
  • Small batches for pilot builds and field trials
  • Custom brackets, covers and frames in mixed sizes
  • Pre-production parts while a design is still being finalised

What Speeds Up a Low-Volume Quote

  • 2D drawing and 3D model if available
  • Material and thickness, or the closest acceptable alternative
  • Quantity now, and the quantity you expect later
  • Which dimensions are critical and which are reference only
  • Finish, packing and destination

Low MOQ Questions

Do you really accept a single piece?

Yes. Prototype and single-part orders are quoted per part; the per-piece price reflects setup time more than material.

Is a prototype made the same way as a production part?

Usually by laser cutting and CNC bending without dedicated tooling. If the design later moves to tooling, we confirm what changes.

Can I order a prototype now and a batch later?

Yes, and we keep the first-piece record so the repeat order runs to the same setup.

Does a small quantity mean lower quality?

No. Small runs get first-piece inspection before the batch continues, precisely because there is no long run to settle the setup.

Trade Terms and Delivery

We quote under the standard Incoterms your logistics team already works with, and build the packing and documentation around the one you choose.

  • EXW — you collect from our Ningbo facility and run export clearance through your own forwarder.
  • FOB Ningbo — we deliver to the vessel at Ningbo port and handle export clearance.
  • CIF — we cover carriage and insurance to your named destination port.
  • DDP — we handle carriage, insurance, import clearance and duties through to your door.

Send your destination country, target delivery date and preferred trade term together with the drawing. Request a quotation.

Payment Terms

How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.

  • 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
  • 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
  • 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.

If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.

Quotation Time

We quote from your drawings. How long that takes depends on what the part asks for:

  • Simple parts — quoted within 24 hours. Laser-cut blanks and bent components, supplied with complete 2D or 3D drawings. Mon–Fri, GMT+8.
  • Complex assemblies — quoted after the drawing review. Payment kiosks, multi-part welded frames, enclosures with purchased hardware, or anything needing a coating or assembly trial. We confirm a quotation date once the scope is clear.

Production lead time is quoted separately, after drawing review and process confirmation. Send your drawings.
