Introduction

Proper nutrition is the foundation of productive livestock farming, and feeding systems must deliver feed efficiently while minimizing waste and contamination. From simple troughs to automated feed delivery systems, each component must be durable, hygienic, and appropriate for the target animal species. Feeding System Components

Feed troughs hold feed for animal consumption, fabricated from galvanized steel sheet formed to profiles that minimize waste. Automatic feeders deliver controlled amounts at specified intervals, with feeder bodies, dispensing mechanisms, and mounting brackets. Feed delivery systems use augers or chains to transport feed, requiring delivery tubes, drop tubes, and drive mounting brackets. Feed storage bins hold bulk feed, protecting it from moisture and pests. Mineral feeders provide free-choice access to supplements with weather-protective covers.

Material Selection

Galvanized steel is the standard material with zinc coating providing corrosion resistance against feed moisture, animal saliva, and waste. We use 1.0 to 2.5 mm sheet and tube. For components in direct contact with wet feed, stainless steel (grade 304) provides superior longevity. For enhanced appearance, powder coating over galvanized steel provides a smoother, easier-to-clean surface.

Design Considerations

Feed represents the largest cost in livestock production, so trough profiles prevent animals from pulling feed out and feeder designs control feed flow. Feeding systems must be designed for easy cleaning with smooth surfaces, rounded corners, and drainage features. All components must have smooth edges and appropriate gaps for animal safety. Feeding systems face daily abuse from animals, feed abrasion, and cleaning, requiring adequate material thickness and reinforcement.

Fabrication Process

Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts trough blanks, feeder components, and mounting brackets. CNC press brake machines form trough bodies and feeder housings with precise bending for waste-minimizing profiles. Component assembly uses MIG welding for galvanized steel and TIG welding for stainless steel, with all feed-contact welds continuous and ground smooth. Galvanized components are hot-dip galvanized after fabrication, with stainless steel components possibly electropolished.

Case Study: Cattle Feedlot Feeding System

An Australian cattle feedlot required feeding system components for a 10,000-head facility expansion including 500 feed troughs, 50 mineral feeders, and feed delivery system components. We fabricated troughs from 2.0 mm galvanized steel sheet with rolled edges and drainage features, mineral feeders from 1.5 mm stainless steel, and delivery brackets from 3.0 mm galvanized steel. The feedlot manager reported excellent durability and feed efficiency.
