How This Library Circulation Desk Is Fabricated and Checked
A circulation desk is a fitted product rather than a catalogue one. It has to match the counter run, take the weight of staff and equipment on the working side, and hide the cable route that every desk acquires.
| Stage | What happens | What is verified before the job moves on |
|---|---|---|
| Layout and development | The desk is developed from the layout rather than from a standard module: panels, returns, transaction top and any back counter | The layout dimensions and working heights, confirmed against the room before anything is cut. A fitted desk is expensive to change after the steel is formed |
| Panel and carcass forming | Panels, plinths and carcass sections laser cut and formed | Panel square and plinth positions, because the desk has to sit level on a floor that is rarely level |
| Frame welding and squaring | Steel frame and the joining brackets welded | Frame square, and the front elevation straight over the whole run – which is the part the visitor actually sees |
| Cable and service provision | Cable route, grommets and access openings made | That the route is still reachable after assembly. A cable path that only works during assembly is not a cable path |
| Laminate top | Transaction top cut, edge-banded and fitted to the steel carcass | The joint between laminate and steel, and that the top is level along the run |
| Surface preparation and coating | Degrease, phosphate, then powder coat the steel elements to the agreed colour | Film thickness and colour on the front faces, which are on show and get leaned on |
| Trial assembly and packing | The desk assembled as far as transport allows, then wrapped and crated | That the sub-units line up and the fixings are identified, because a fitted product is assembled on site rather than in the workshop |

Revisions That Skip New Tooling on Library Circulation Desk
A desk is specified around the room and the staff who use it, so the layout is the variable that matters most.
| What can be changed | What it affects | What it does not affect |
|---|---|---|
| Layout and counter run length | Panel sizes, number of sub-units and how it is transported | The working height, provided it stays within a comfortable reach |
| Working height for seated or standing staff | Carcass height and where the transaction top sits | The layout |
| Transaction top: laminate, steel or solid surface | Appearance, wear and the edge detail | The steel carcass |
| Storage: drawers, cupboards or open shelving | The carcass layout, and whether it locks | The counter run |
| Cable management and power provision | Grommet positions and how cables reach the floor | The structure |
| Colour combination of steel and laminate | Powder specification and laminate range | Nothing structural |
Questions Buyers Ask About Library Circulation Desk
Why is a circulation desk made in sub-units?
Because it has to reach the room through doors and lifts, and one welded desk of that size will not. Splitting it into sub-units lets it be built, transported and assembled on site, and the joints are designed so the front elevation still reads as one continuous counter.
What working height should we specify?
It depends on whether staff are seated or standing and on the reach across the transaction top. If the height is uncertain, give us the seated height and the counter depth, and the desk is set so the top lands within a comfortable reach rather than at a nominal figure.
Can the laminate be matched to the counter we already have?
Usually yes, if the laminate is still in production. If it is discontinued, the honest answer is that the closest match will be visible where the new desk meets the old. It is worth deciding whether to re-top the adjacent run rather than accept a difference that will always show.
A fitted desk is decided by the room and the layout, so those are worth settling before anything is cut. Send the layout and the working height through the RFQ form and the sub-units are developed to it. Related: custom sheet metal fabrication, welding and enclosure assembly.
Two Heights, One Piece of Furniture
A circulation desk is two working surfaces at different heights: around 750 mm on the staff side and around 950 mm on the public side. The difference is small enough that the two can be built as one frame, and that is usually the right approach – a single welded frame with a step in the top is stiffer and cheaper than two units joined. The complication is the transition: the join between the two levels has to be detailed so a book slid across the counter does not catch, and so the staff side has the knee clearance it needs for someone sitting at it all day.
- The top is high-pressure laminate on a substrate, which means the steel frame has to present a flat, continuous support – a frame that flexes will telegraph through a laminate top.
- Cable management is specified as “yes” on most drawings and is usually unspecified in detail. We need the equipment list: terminals, scanners, monitors, and where the cables enter.
- Drawer count and layout follow from the workflow, not from a standard – returns, holds, and cash handling each need different provision.
Building to a Layout Rather Than to a Size
A circulation desk is dimensioned per layout, which means it is usually part of a larger fit-out and has to meet adjacent units, return counters and a specific floor plan. That makes interface dimensions more important than overall ones: where the desk meets a wall, where it meets another counter, and what height the adjacent worktop sits at. Send the plan and we will work from it rather than from a nominal rectangle.
Because these are built to order and installed once, get the sample and the finish approval sorted before the batch. A laminate colour or a powder shade approved on a photo is a risk on a piece of furniture this visible and this expensive to replace. Lead time is quoted after drawing review and process confirmation.
Payment Terms
How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.
- 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
- 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
- 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.
If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.
Questions buyers ask before sending drawings
The questions that come up most often before a project starts, answered the way we answer them by email.
What do you need from me to quote Library Circulation Desk?
2D drawings as PDF, DWG or DXF, or 3D files as STEP, IGES or SolidWorks, together with material grade, sheet thickness, surface finish, quantity and destination country. If the drawing is not finished yet, send a photo, a sketch or the existing part instead — we review what can be measured from it and reply with the questions that still need answering.
How long does a quotation take?
Enquiries are answered within one business day. Simple laser-cut and bent parts are quoted within 24 hours. Welded frames, assembled units and multi-part structures are quoted after the drawing review and process confirmation, and the date is confirmed in our reply.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
Prototypes are made from a single piece and small batches of 10–50 pieces are routine. Prototype, first batch and repeat volume are quoted together so the numbers stay consistent as the project scales.
Can you work from a sample or a photo if I have no drawing?
Yes. Send the part itself, clear photographs with a rule or caliper in frame, or a dimensioned sketch. We measure what can be measured, list what is still undefined, and confirm it with you before production.
Need a Similar Part?
Most enquiries that start on a page like this are not an order for Library Circulation Desk — they are a search for a factory that can make something like it. Send us your drawing, 3D model or sample and we will review the manufacturing process and the quotation requirements, then come back with a process plan, a price and a lead time.
We work from 2D drawings, STEP / DWG / DXF / PDF files, or a physical sample if that is all you have.
No complete drawings yet? Describe the part, send photos or a sketch, or send a sample — we can start from there. Discuss your project.

Quotation Time
We quote from your drawings. How long that takes depends on what the part asks for:
- Simple parts — quoted within 24 hours. Laser-cut blanks and bent components, supplied with complete 2D or 3D drawings. Mon–Fri, GMT+8.
- Complex assemblies — quoted after the drawing review. Payment kiosks, multi-part welded frames, enclosures with purchased hardware, or anything needing a coating or assembly trial. We confirm a quotation date once the scope is clear.
Production lead time is quoted separately, after drawing review and process confirmation. Send your drawings.
