Industrial Platform Carts: Heavy-Duty Sheet Metal Fabrication

Learn how heavy-duty industrial platform carts are designed and fabricated for material handling. Discover load capacity engineering, caster selection, and real-world manufacturing examples.

Introduction

Industrial platform carts are essential material handling equipment in factories, warehouses, and distribution centers. They must carry heavy loads, navigate tight aisles, withstand daily abuse, and protect both cargo and personnel. At Fulei Metal, we fabricate industrial platform carts for clients in manufacturing, logistics, and retail sectors.

Platform Cart Design

The load capacity of a platform cart depends on deck strength, frame rigidity, and caster selection. We design carts for load capacities ranging from 200 kg for light-duty applications to 1,000 kg or more for heavy-duty industrial use. Platform decks can be flat, with raised edges, or with fold-down sides. We fabricate decks with strengthening ribs formed during the press brake process, increasing load capacity without adding excessive weight.

Handles must be comfortable, durable, and positioned at an ergonomic height. We fabricate handles from tubular steel or formed sheet metal. Casters are critical to cart performance, and we fabricate caster mounting plates that match industry-standard caster bolt patterns. For heavy-duty carts, we use 6 mm or thicker mounting plates welded to the frame.

Material Selection

Cold-rolled steel is the standard material for industrial platform carts, with 1.5 to 3.0 mm steel for decks and 2.0 to 4.0 mm for frame components. For food processing, pharmaceutical, and cleanroom applications, stainless steel carts provide corrosion resistance and hygiene. Aluminum platform carts offer significant weight savings, popular in retail, healthcare, and aviation applications.

Fabrication Process

Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts deck blanks, frame components, and mounting plates from flat sheet stock. Deck pans, edge trims, and handle components are formed on our CNC press brake machines. Frame assembly, deck-to-frame attachment, and handle mounting are completed at our ten welding stations using MIG welding for steel and TIG welding for stainless steel. Platform carts are typically powder-coated in blue, red, black, or grey, with custom RAL colors available.

Our assembly team installs casters, handles, hinges, latches, and accessories. Each cart is test-rolled to verify caster alignment, brake function, and handle security.

Case Study: Automotive Factory Carts

A European automotive manufacturer required 300 custom platform carts for a new assembly line. The carts needed to carry engines weighing up to 400 kg, navigate 90-degree turns in narrow aisles, and integrate with automated conveyor systems. We designed carts with 3.0 mm steel decks, welded tubular frames, precision caster mounting plates, and custom positioning features for conveyor integration. The client reported excellent performance and durability in daily production use.

Conclusion

Industrial platform carts require a combination of structural engineering, precision fabrication, and practical design. Fulei Metal’s integrated manufacturing process produces carts that deliver reliable performance in demanding industrial environments.
