How This Desk Organizer Is Fabricated and Checked

A steel desk organizer looks like nothing more than a folded box with dividers. What decides whether it arrives usable is not the steel: it is the flat pattern that sets every divider position, and the bend sequence that decides whether those dividers can be formed in the order you would naturally expect.

The route below is the one used at Fulei Metal, with what is measured at each step. It is written so you can see which design changes are cheap and which ones are not.

Folding runs on standard press brake tooling, so the part shares its process control with everything else folded here.
StageWhat happensWhat is verified before the job moves on
Flat pattern and cut layoutThe blank is nested and cut from 1.0 mm SPCC sheet. Divider slots, bend reliefs and the outline are cut in one pass. The flat pattern is checked against the folded drawing. Every divider pitch is set by the cut, so a mistake here cannot be bent back into tolerance later.
Bend sequenceThe blank is folded on a CNC press brake. Dividers are formed out of the base panel itself rather than welded in as separate pieces.Bend order is settled before the first part. A divider folded too early can block the tooling for a later bend. The test piece is measured for angle and for the first and last divider positions.
Corner lockingWhere the outer wall meets the base, the joint is closed with an interlocking tab formed in the same blank. There is no welding on this product – the joint is part of the fold sequence. The interlock is checked for tightness and for flushness on the visible face. A loose interlock shows under coating as a shadow line, and it cannot be corrected once the part has been sprayed.
Deburr and edge conditioningLaser dross is removed and every cut edge is dulled.Edge condition is inspected by hand. A 1.0 mm cut edge will cut a finger or a carton liner if it is left sharp, and that is a complaint you cannot recover from.
Pre-treatmentDegrease, rinse and a conversion coating before powder.Corners and folded edges are checked for residual oil. This is where pre-treatment most often fails, and it is also where coating adhesion fails first.
Powder coatingElectrostatic spray, then oven cure. Matte black, white or gold as standard.Film thickness is measured on a test panel and inside the corners. Coating narrows each compartment slightly, so the internal dimension is confirmed after the oven, not before.
Final assembly and checkNon-slip pads and any supplied hardware are fitted, then the unit is checked against the folded drawing. The final check covers overall size, flatness of the base, and that the unit sits without rocking on a flat surface.
Folded panels from a production run staged at Fulei Metal. Every divider in a desk organizer comes out of the same blank, so the compartment pitch is fixed by the laser cut rather than by the operator bending it.

Changes Desk Organizer Metal Can Absorb Without New Tooling

Because the part is cut flat and folded with standard tooling, most changes stop at the cut file. The limits are geometric, not tooling cost.

FAQ on Desk Organizer Metal

Can the compartment sizes be changed without new tooling?

Yes, and the limit is not the tooling – it is the flat pattern. Each divider is formed out of the base panel, so widening one compartment narrows its neighbour. A change means the cut file is redrawn and the bend sequence is re-checked at the same time. No new press tooling is involved, which is why small and mid-volume runs stay practical. Send the largest item that has to fit in each compartment, and the layout can be set from that.

Why is the tolerance plus or minus 0.3 mm when the part is only folded?

Bending is repeatable, but it is cumulative. On an organizer with several folds each bend carries its own small error, and the dimensions that matter sit at the end of that chain: the outside size and the position of the outermost divider. Those are the dimensions we hold and measure. Holding every intermediate dimension to the same figure on a folded part is not realistic, and asking for it is the usual reason a folded product looks more expensive than it needs to be.

Does the powder coating change how anything fits?

It does, and it is easy to overlook. Powder goes on at roughly 60 to 80 microns per face, so on two faces that slide or nest together the coating closes the gap by more than 0.1 mm in total. Where the design depends on a sliding fit, that allowance is built into the flat pattern. The inside width of each compartment is confirmed after the curing oven rather than before it.

Send the drawing, or a sketch with the overall size and the number of compartments, and say what has to fit inside each one. The layout is set at the cut file stage, so it is the cheapest thing to change before production and one of the more awkward things to change afterwards. Send a sketch for a quotation.

Batch check against the approved sample is part of the normal inspection routine here, not an extra step added for this product.

Payment Terms

How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.

  • 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
  • 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
  • 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.

If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.

Questions buyers ask before sending drawings

The questions that come up most often before a project starts, answered the way we answer them by email.

What do you need from me to quote Desk Organizer?

2D drawings as PDF, DWG or DXF, or 3D files as STEP, IGES or SolidWorks, together with material grade, sheet thickness, surface finish, quantity and destination country. If the drawing is not finished yet, send a photo, a sketch or the existing part instead — we review what can be measured from it and reply with the questions that still need answering.

How long does a quotation take?

Enquiries are answered within one business day. Simple laser-cut and bent parts are quoted within 24 hours. Welded frames, assembled units and multi-part structures are quoted after the drawing review and process confirmation, and the date is confirmed in our reply.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

Prototypes are made from a single piece and small batches of 10–50 pieces are routine. Prototype, first batch and repeat volume are quoted together so the numbers stay consistent as the project scales.

Can you work from a sample or a photo if I have no drawing?

Yes. Send the part itself, clear photographs with a rule or caliper in frame, or a dimensioned sketch. We measure what can be measured, list what is still undefined, and confirm it with you before production.

Need a Similar Part?

Most enquiries that start on a page like this are not an order for Desk Organizer — they are a search for a factory that can make something like it. Send us your drawing, 3D model or sample and we will review the manufacturing process and the quotation requirements, then come back with a process plan, a price and a lead time.

We work from 2D drawings, STEP / DWG / DXF / PDF files, or a physical sample if that is all you have.

Trade Terms and Delivery

We quote under the standard Incoterms your logistics team already works with, and build the packing and documentation around the one you choose.

  • EXW — you collect from our Ningbo facility and run export clearance through your own forwarder.
  • FOB Ningbo — we deliver to the vessel at Ningbo port and handle export clearance.
  • CIF — we cover carriage and insurance to your named destination port.
  • DDP — we handle carriage, insurance, import clearance and duties through to your door.

Send your destination country, target delivery date and preferred trade term together with the drawing. Request a quotation.

Quotation Time

We quote from your drawings. How long that takes depends on what the part asks for:

  • Simple parts — quoted within 24 hours. Laser-cut blanks and bent components, supplied with complete 2D or 3D drawings. Mon–Fri, GMT+8.
  • Complex assemblies — quoted after the drawing review. Payment kiosks, multi-part welded frames, enclosures with purchased hardware, or anything needing a coating or assembly trial. We confirm a quotation date once the scope is clear.

Production lead time is quoted separately, after drawing review and process confirmation. Send your drawings.
