How This Reading Lamp Housing Is Fabricated and Checked
A reading lamp housing is two parts doing different jobs: an aluminium body where the finish and the straightness are on show, and a steel base where the weight and the stability sit. Most of the cost and most of the problems are at the joint between them.
| Stage | What happens | What is verified before the job moves on |
|---|---|---|
| Extrusion cutting | Aluminium extrusion cut to length, with the cut ends squared | Cut length, squareness of the ends and surface condition. A cut end that is not square shows as an uneven gap where the housing meets the base |
| CNC machining | Joint faces and any threads machined, and the cable passage made | The machined face position and thread condition. Both the joint angle and the cable route are set here |
| Steel base pressing | Base pressed from steel, with the weight pocket and the fixing pattern formed | Base flatness and footprint. A lamp that does not sit flat is unstable on a table, which is the whole product |
| Joint assembly | Housing assembled to the base by the designed method | The joint angle, and that the housing is square to the base rather than square on the bench |
| Anodising and coating | Aluminium anodised, steel base powder coated | Anodising thickness and colour consistency against the reference, and film thickness on the base |
| Electrical provision and check | Cable route, strain relief and switch aperture made and checked | That the cable passes without a sharp edge, and that the strain relief actually holds. This is a safety point rather than a finish point |
| Packing | Individually wrapped with the shade protected | That the finish is unmarked and the weighted base cannot move inside the box |

Adjusting Reading Lamp Housing Library Metal Without New Tooling
On a lamp the housing is what is seen and the base is what makes it stand up, so the two are usually specified together.
| What can be changed | What it affects | What it does not affect |
|---|---|---|
| Housing length and section | The extrusion cut length and the machined joint | The base |
| Joint angle and overall height | The machined face and the assembled angle | The extrusion section |
| Base size and weight | The pressing, and how stable the lamp sits on a table | The housing |
| Finish: anodised colour or powder coated | Appearance, and how the surface ages | The geometry |
| Switch and cable entry position | The apertures and the cable route | The housing |
| Mounting: table, clamp or wall | Whether a different base or a bracket is used | The housing |
What Buyers Usually Ask About Reading Lamp Housing Library Metal
Why is the base steel rather than aluminium?
Because stability comes from mass low down, and steel gives that at lower cost than a machined aluminium base. It also lets the base take a different colour from the housing without a second anodising set-up, which is what most of our customers ask for.
Can the housing be made in a different section?
That means a new extrusion die, which only makes sense above a certain order quantity. Below that, the practical route is to machine or fold the housing from sheet. The honest answer is that both options should be priced side by side rather than one being assumed.
How is the anodised finish matched across batches?
Anodising colour varies with the alloy and the bath, so the reference is kept as a physical sample rather than a colour code, and each batch is compared against it. Where two batches will be visible together, tell us, because the running order is planned around that.
The joint and the base decide whether a lamp reads as a made product or a kit of parts. Send the housing section and the intended base through the RFQ form and both are developed together. Related: surface finishing, custom sheet metal fabrication and quality inspection.
Heat Sinking Is the Housing’s Real Job
A reading lamp housing in aluminium is not only a cover – it is the heat path for a 5 to 10 W LED. LEDs do not usually fail suddenly; they dim and shift colour as the junction runs hot, and the only way the heat leaves is through the housing. That makes the wall thickness, the internal contact between the LED board and the housing, and the external surface area all functional decisions. An extrusion with a CNC-machined face gives a flat seat for the board, and that flatness is what makes the thermal path work – a board on a bowed surface touches in three places.
- Anodised aluminium is chosen here for two reasons: it looks right on a reading room desk, and the anodised layer is hard enough to survive daily handling.
- A weighted base is a stability requirement, not a styling one. A 500 mm arm with an adjustable head puts the centre of mass well outside the base unless the base is heavy.
- The adjustable head is a wearing joint. A friction pivot needs a defined interface or it droops within a year.
Combining Aluminium and Steel in One Assembly
This housing is aluminium with a steel base, which means two materials with different finishes and different forming routes. Aluminium comes from extrusion and CNC; the steel base is pressed and coated. They meet at a joint that has to be rigid, and the two finishes have to be matched closely enough that the assembly reads as one product – a brushed anodised arm on a black base is a deliberate contrast, but two slightly different blacks is a mistake.
Electrical safety and the certification of the finished luminaire belong to the luminaire manufacturer or a third party they appoint; our scope is the metal parts built to the drawing. Send the arm length, the head geometry, the LED specification and the finish; lead time is quoted after drawing review and process confirmation.
Payment Terms
How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.
- 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
- 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
- 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.
If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.
Questions buyers ask before sending drawings
The questions that come up most often before a project starts, answered the way we answer them by email.
What do you need from me to quote Reading Lamp Housing?
2D drawings as PDF, DWG or DXF, or 3D files as STEP, IGES or SolidWorks, together with material grade, sheet thickness, surface finish, quantity and destination country. If the drawing is not finished yet, send a photo, a sketch or the existing part instead — we review what can be measured from it and reply with the questions that still need answering.
How long does a quotation take?
Enquiries are answered within one business day. Simple laser-cut and bent parts are quoted within 24 hours. Welded frames, assembled units and multi-part structures are quoted after the drawing review and process confirmation, and the date is confirmed in our reply.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
Prototypes are made from a single piece and small batches of 10–50 pieces are routine. Prototype, first batch and repeat volume are quoted together so the numbers stay consistent as the project scales.
Can you work from a sample or a photo if I have no drawing?
Yes. Send the part itself, clear photographs with a rule or caliper in frame, or a dimensioned sketch. We measure what can be measured, list what is still undefined, and confirm it with you before production.
Need a Similar Part?
Most enquiries that start on a page like this are not an order for Reading Lamp Housing — they are a search for a factory that can make something like it. Send us your drawing, 3D model or sample and we will review the manufacturing process and the quotation requirements, then come back with a process plan, a price and a lead time.
We work from 2D drawings, STEP / DWG / DXF / PDF files, or a physical sample if that is all you have.
No complete drawings yet? Describe the part, send photos or a sketch, or send a sample — we can start from there. Discuss your project.
Trade Terms and Delivery
We quote under the standard Incoterms your logistics team already works with, and build the packing and documentation around the one you choose.
- EXW — you collect from our Ningbo facility and run export clearance through your own forwarder.
- FOB Ningbo — we deliver to the vessel at Ningbo port and handle export clearance.
- CIF — we cover carriage and insurance to your named destination port.
