How This Barn Door Sliding Track System Is Fabricated and Checked
A sliding door track has one critical dimension: straightness over its full length. A door hanging 300 kg on a track that is even slightly bowed will run towards one end and jam, and no amount of adjustment at the roller fixes a track that is not straight.
| Stage | What happens | What is verified before the job moves on |
|---|---|---|
| Roll forming the track | Coil roll formed to the track section continuously | The section dimensions on the first metres, since roll forming gives a consistent profile over the length rather than at a point |
| Cutting to length | Track cut to length, with the cut ends squared and deburred | Cut length and squareness of the end, because the ends are what the next length or the stop bolts to |
| Straightness check | The formed track checked along its length against a straight edge or a string line | Straightness over the whole length rather than at the ends. A track that is straight at both ends and bowed in the middle is the one that fails |
| Bracket and hanger fabrication | Brackets, stops and hangers cut, formed and welded | Bracket positions and the fixing pattern, because the door load enters the building through these |
| Drain and vent provision | Holes formed in closed sections so the galvanising bath can drain | Hole positions on every closed bracket or section |
| Hot-dip galvanising | Track, brackets and stops dipped, drained and cooled | Zinc thickness, and the track checked for straightness again after dipping, because the bath heat can move a long thin section |
| Roller fit and function check | Rollers assembled and run on the finished track | That the rollers run the full length without tight spots, which is the only test that confirms the track and the rollers agree with each other |
| Packing | Track bundled and supported along its length for transport | That the bundle is supported rather than resting on its ends, because a long track will bend under its own weight in a badly made bundle |

What Can Change on Barn Door Sliding Track System Without New Tooling
Door weight and opening width are the two inputs; the track section and the fixing follow.
| What can be changed | What it affects | What it does not affect |
|---|---|---|
| Opening width and door weight | Track section, bracket spacing and the roller specification | The wall or structure it fixes to |
| Single track or a double run | Whether two doors pass each other, and the extra depth required | The door weight per leaf |
| Hanger and roller type | How the door is carried and how much height it needs | The track section |
| Stops, guides and a floor guide | Whether the door can be held closed and kept from swinging | The track |
| Fixing method and centres | The load path into the structure, and the installer’s drilling pattern | The track itself |
| Finish | Life in a wet or an open-fronted building | Nothing structural |
Barn Door Sliding Track System: Common Buyer Questions
Why is straightness the critical dimension on a track?
Because a door is heavy and gravity is not negotiable. On a bowed track the door runs downhill towards the low point and the roller binds, and the buyer experiences it as a door that will not stay put. It cannot be corrected with the hangers, which is why the track is checked along its length before it is packed.
How much load can the track take?
It is set by the section, the bracket spacing and the structure behind it, and those three have to be considered together. A track rated for a door weight on brackets that are too far apart is not rated at all. Give us the door weight and the structure and the bracket spacing follows.
What happens to a long track during galvanising?
The bath is hot, and a long thin section can move while it is at temperature. That is why the track is checked for straightness again after dipping rather than only before, and why very long tracks are sometimes supplied in sections with a designed joint rather than as one piece.
The track, the rollers and the brackets have to agree with each other and with the structure. Send the opening width, the door weight and what it fixes to through the RFQ form and the system is sized to all three. Related: CNC bending, welding and surface finishing.
The Track Is Straight Until It Is Galvanized, and Then It Is Not
A sliding door track is a roll-formed section that has to stay straight along its whole length, because the door tells you the truth about it – a track that is straight at both ends and bowed in the middle lets the door run freely halfway and bind when it is pushed fully home. The forming operation can hold that. The zinc bath cannot always. A long galvanized section goes into a bath hot enough to relieve the stresses locked in by forming and welding, and it can come out with a bow that was not there on the bench.
- Roll-formed track is checked for straightness before galvanizing and measured again after it, and it is the second measurement that goes on the record.
- Cast iron rollers are used because they run quietly and wear slowly on a steel rail. The roller is the service item, and it should be specified as one – a track that is still good with a worn roller is worth replacing the roller on.
- Stoppers take the impact of the door every time it is thrown open. They are a wearing part at the end of a long lever, and they are cheaper to over-specify than to replace.
Brackets Carry the Door, Not the Wall You Happen To Have
The load path on a sliding barn door is short and unforgiving: door weight into the rollers, rollers into the track, track into the brackets, brackets into whatever the barn is made of. The bracket spacing is what sets the span the track has to bridge, and it is usually decided by where the structure happens to be rather than by calculation. On a timber frame that is fine. On a masonry or a steel opening, the fixing has to be specified for the substrate – a bracket that is adequate for the door can still pull out of a wall that was never meant to carry it.
Tell us what the track is being fixed to and what the door weighs, including a door that has been wet all winter, and we will specify the section, the bracket spacing and the fixing together. If the opening width is not standard, send it; track is supplied to length, so a non-standard opening is a cutting decision rather than a tooling one. Lead time is quoted after drawing review and process confirmation.
Payment Terms
How a project is paid for is agreed before production starts, and the structure that applies to your order is stated on the quotation and on the order confirmation, so there is no ambiguity later.
- 30% advance payment with the order and the 70% balance before shipment — our standard structure.
- 70% advance payment with the order and the 30% balance before shipment — used for some projects.
- 100% payment in advance before production starts — used for some projects.
If your finance team works to a fixed structure, say so in the first enquiry and we will confirm what applies to your order before you commit. Request a quotation.
Questions buyers ask before sending drawings
The questions that come up most often before a project starts, answered the way we answer them by email.
What do you need from me to quote Barn Door Sliding Track System?
2D drawings as PDF, DWG or DXF, or 3D files as STEP, IGES or SolidWorks, together with material grade, sheet thickness, surface finish, quantity and destination country. If the drawing is not finished yet, send a photo, a sketch or the existing part instead — we review what can be measured from it and reply with the questions that still need answering.
How long does a quotation take?
Enquiries are answered within one business day. Simple laser-cut and bent parts are quoted within 24 hours. Welded frames, assembled units and multi-part structures are quoted after the drawing review and process confirmation, and the date is confirmed in our reply.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
Prototypes are made from a single piece and small batches of 10–50 pieces are routine. Prototype, first batch and repeat volume are quoted together so the numbers stay consistent as the project scales.
Can you work from a sample or a photo if I have no drawing?
Yes. Send the part itself, clear photographs with a rule or caliper in frame, or a dimensioned sketch. We measure what can be measured, list what is still undefined, and confirm it with you before production.
Need a Similar Part?
Most enquiries that start on a page like this are not an order for Barn Door Sliding Track System — they are a search for a factory that can make something like it. Send us your drawing, 3D model or sample and we will review the manufacturing process and the quotation requirements, then come back with a process plan, a price and a lead time.
We work from 2D drawings, STEP / DWG / DXF / PDF files, or a physical sample if that is all you have.
No complete drawings yet? Describe the part, send photos or a sketch, or send a sample — we can start from there. Discuss your project.
