Bathroom accessories are specified for a permanent damp environment that also gets cleaned with aggressive products, and that combination eliminates coated steel from most of the range. A coated part will eventually be chipped, and in a wet room a chip is a corrosion site that spreads under the coating edge and cannot be touched up invisibly. Stainless is the usual answer, with one caveat that is worth knowing: some household cleaners contain chlorides, and 304 stainless can pit under repeated exposure to them. The other recurring issue on these products is fixing. A bathroom wall is often tiled, and drilling a tile gives one chance, so mounting holes are usually slotted or oversize and a cover cap is used over the fixing rather than expecting the installer to hit an exact position.
