Access to clean, reliable water is essential for livestock health and productivity. Watering systems must deliver water consistently in all weather conditions while withstanding animal use and resisting corrosion. Waterer Types
Trough waterers are open containers ranging from small wall-mounted units to large field troughs. Automatic waterers use float or pressure valves to maintain water levels automatically. Bowl waterers are compact vessels that dispense water on demand when animals press a paddle. Cup waterers are small drinking cups for pig and poultry operations. Freeze-proof waterers in cold climates use insulation and heating elements.
Material Selection
Stainless steel (grade 304) is preferred for waterer components in direct contact with water, as it does not rust and is easy to clean. Galvanized steel is used for components without direct water contact such as mounting brackets and housing panels. For external components, powder coating over galvanized steel provides corrosion protection and aesthetic appeal.
Design Considerations
Waterer designs must protect water from contamination by animal waste, feed, and debris with protective covers and drainage features. Automatic waterer valves must be protected from animal damage while remaining accessible. In cold climates, designs must prevent freezing through insulation, heating elements, and constant-flow systems. Waterers must be designed for easy cleaning with drain plugs, smooth interiors, and removable components. Waterer height and positioning must be appropriate for each species.
Fabrication Process
Our TRUMPF fiber laser cuts waterer body components, brackets, and mounting plates. CNC press brake machines form waterer bodies and housings with watertight seams. Waterer assembly uses TIG welding for stainless steel producing watertight, hygienic seams and MIG welding for galvanized structural components. Stainless steel components may be electropolished, and galvanized components are hot-dip galvanized after fabrication.
Our assembly team installs valves, floats, heating elements, thermostats, and connection fittings. Each waterer undergoes functional testing including valve operation, water level control, and leak verification.
Case Study: Livestock Waterers for a US Producer
Watering equipment for an established livestock producer in the United States forms part of a supply relationship running since 2016, with stainless drinking components and galvanized trough fabrication moving in parallel. A waterer is a simple part with one non-obvious failure mode: the load is water, and water is heavy. A trough that is stiff enough when empty will bow outwards at the sides when it is full, and if the drain outlet is set into that side panel, the bowing pulls it out of shape and the drain stops sealing. The stiffening on the long panels is therefore sized from the full water load rather than from the wall thickness, and the drain fitting is checked for seating after the trough has been filled and emptied, not before.
